This paper considers the implications of changing trade barriers on the survival of Canadian manufacturing firms. A segmented market Cournot model was developed to describe the effects of trade liberalization for heterogeneous firms operating in diverse industries. The predictions of this model are tested empirically using firm-level data for both public and private corporations and tariff rates for both Canada and the United States. Our findings suggest that Canadian tariff reductions decreased the probability of the survival of Canadian firms while declines in American tariffs increased the probability. Combining these two effects, firms in two-thirds of Canadian manufacturing industries saw their probability of survival increase as a result of the tariff reductions mandated by the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement. However, the sensitivity of individual firms to tariff changes was mitigated by the characteristics of those firms. In particular, productivity and leverage played substantial roles in determining a firm's vulnerability to failure as a result of trade liberalization.

This paper documents the approach used to construct the shelter element of the current spatial index program. The intercity indexes of the retail price differentials program of Prices Division had, until recently, excluded any reference to shelter because of conceptual issues. A rental equivalence approach is used for measuring spatial variations in the costs of shelter services among cities. To control for quality variations across areas, a semi-log separate hedonic regression methodology is used to construct the Laspeyres, Paasche, and Fisher Törnqvist interarea indices.

This article provides a practical example of the development of a survival analysis model. It begins with an overview of the software tool that was used, SAS. The next section examines the construction of a longitudinal file and the challenges that may present. Of particular interest are explanatory variables that do not have a constant value over time. An example of a practical application is provided to illustrate the survival approach. The example consists of an analysis based on data from the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID), specifically data from panel 1 between January 1993 and December 1998. Survey information in vector form is used to develop a Cox semi-parametric model. Comments are provided on a sample computer program. The way in which the program handles the main variables is also discussed. The last section contains a brief description of the results of a relatively simple model.

Large data sets present several challenges to researchers, particularly to less experienced researchers. One of the most time-consuming and frustrating activities for beginning researchers, who do not have experience with large datasets, can be pruning or parsing the data set to only the variables and sample of interest. The production of an 'efficient' data file can assist in the increased performance of hardware and software as well as reducing frustration for the researcher. One way of producing a parsed efficient data file using a program called Stat/Transfer is presented.

We join Brick in reflecting on bogus respondents’ impact on the state of commercial nonprobability surveys. Finally, we consider Elliott’s discussion of solutions to the challenge raised in our study.

While KML enlighten readers about “bogus responding” and possible patterns in them, this discussion suggests combining these new-found results with other avenues of research in nonprobability sampling, such as improvement of representativeness.

Kennedy, Mercer and Lau examine data quality issues associated with opt-in nonprobability samples frequently used in the United States. They show that the estimates from these samples have serious problems that go beyond representativeness. A total survey error perspective is important for evaluating all types of surveys.

Description: Statistical approaches developed for nonprobability samples generally focus on nonrandom selection as the primary reason survey respondents might differ systematically from the target population. Well-established theory states that in these instances, by conditioning on the necessary auxiliary variables, selection can be rendered ignorable and survey estimates will be free of bias. But this logic rests on the assumption that measurement error is nonexistent or small. In this study we test this assumption in two ways. First, we use a large benchmarking study to identify subgroups for which errors in commercial, online nonprobability samples are especially large in ways that are unlikely due to selection effects. Then we present a follow-up study examining one cause of the large errors: bogus responding (i.e., survey answers that are fraudulent, mischievous or otherwise insincere). We find that bogus responding, particularly among respondents identifying as young or Hispanic, is a significant and widespread problem in commercial, online nonprobability samples, at least in the United States. This research highlights the need for statisticians working with commercial nonprobability samples to address bogus responding and issues of representativeness – not just the latter.

In Canada, past research has analyzed the degree to which non-accidental mortality increases during single extreme heat events; however, few studies have considered multiple causes of death and the impacts of extreme heat events on mortality over longer time periods. This study analyzes the impacts of extreme heat events on nonaccidental, cardiovascular, and respiratory deaths from 2000 to 2020 in 12 of the largest cities in Canada.

New articles are published electronically each month.

Health Reports had an impact factor of 5.0 for 2022 and a five-year impact factor of 5.6. All articles are indexed in PubMed. Our online catalogue is free and receives more than 700,000 visits per year. External submissions are welcome.
