Why are so many seniors still at work? Some enjoy their job and intend on working indefinitely, while others feel forced to work for economic reasons. The 2001 Census is used to update an earlier study focussing on the occupations of seniors who continue to work beyond the age of 65, the traditional age of retirement.

This bulletin assesses the degree of spatial diversity across rural and urban Canada in terms of a number of demographic, social and economic indicators. A multivariate statistical method is used to reduce 27 commonly used and understood indicators to 6 dimensions. These dimensions are used to profile and to map the 288 census divisions (CDs) of Canada. This analysis investigates the nature of these dimensions, their spatial distribution and their relationship with the prevailing regional classifications. These results can help a variety of stakeholders and decision-makers to more fully understand the regional context in which they operate, in comparison with the rest of the country.

This paper assesses the degree of spatial diversity exhibited across Canada by using 1996 Census of Population data, aggregated at the census division (CD) level. The approach taken in this research adopts a broad territorial focus, is exploratory in nature and emphasizes territorial performance in a comparative context.

The study is based on a range of commonly used and understood demographic, social and economic variables. A factor analysis was conducted in order to identify underlying dimensions that characterize each CD across Canada. The factor analysis resulted in six factors, each of which provides a profile of the CDs on a number of key attributes.

The research is primarily descriptive and will be of interest to a broad audience. It can be used to facilitate the diffusion of baseline data to a wide range of stakeholders, stimulate discussion on spatial diversity at the subprovincial level and enhance the debate on potential alternative development paths for each region. Note that this research is, in turn, constrained by the nature of the data available. The analysis is also static and focussed on a cross-section. The causes of the observed diversity are not explicitly accounted for in the study.

The annual Juristat, Youth Court Statistics, 2002/03, summarizes trends from provincial/territorial youth courts across Canada, which provide data to the Youth Court Survey (YCS). In this Juristat, information is presented on the characteristics of cases and accused youth, conviction rates, sentencing trends and related issues. As well, statistics are presented for the 12-year period from 1991/92, the first year for which national data are available for the YCS, to the current year, 2002/03.

This paper presents data on technological change that have been made comparable from the Survey of Electronic Commerce and Technology (SECT) for 2000 and 2002. It shows that when comparable data for the 1998 to 2000 and 2000 to 2002 periods (based on the definition and survey universe employed by SECT 2000) are used, the propensity to adopt new technologies in the private sector has remained constant at about 40%. The rate of technology adoption in the public sector remained at four out of five organizations introducing significantly improved technologies (a level about twice as high as that for the private sector). This rate also shows little change from 2000. The paper presents the comparable technological change data, while explaining differences in the wording of the survey questions and universe between the two reference years. Information is provided for private and public sectors, selected employment size groups and sectors of both private and public sectors.

Description: The availability of measures to operationalize allostatic load—the cumulative toll on the body of responding to stressor demands—in population health surveys may differ across years or surveys, hampering analyses on the entire sampled population. In this study, the impacts of variable selection and calculation method were evaluated to generate an allostatic load index applicable across all cycles of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS). CHMS data were used to compare individual and population-level changes in scores for allostatic load indexes in which other commonly used measures were substituted for waist-to-hip ratio. Associations between the various constructs and indicators of socioeconomic position were then assessed to evaluate whether relationships were maintained across indexes.

Description: This analysis compares the investment efforts of official language minority (OLM) owned businesses depending on whether they are located in a rural or urban area. The study is based on a model that uses a seemingly unrelated regression equation (SURE) system estimator to simultaneously assess the impact of determinants that explain the investment of businesses in rural and urban areas and to statistically test the differences between the two areas.

Description: This article examines the association between parents' housing wealth and the values of houses owned by their adult children. It also documents parent and child co-ownership arrangements. The article follows a previous article that examined the role that parents' property ownership played in the likelihood of homeownership for children born in the 1990s. Description: The Canadian Income Survey (CIS) has introduced improvements to the methods and data sources used to produce income and poverty estimates with the release of its 2022 reference year estimates. Foremost among these improvements is a significant increase in the sample size for a large subset of the CIS content. The weighting methodology was also improved and the target population of the CIS was changed from persons aged 16 years and over to persons aged 15 years and over. This paper describes the changes made and presents the approximate net result of these changes on the income estimates and data quality of the CIS using 2021 data. The changes described in this paper highlight the ways in which data quality has been improved while having little impact on key CIS estimates and trends.

Description: The Aboriginal Peoples Survey (APS) is a national survey on the social and economic conditions of First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit. The objectives of the APS are to identify the needs of these Aboriginal groups and to inform policy and programs aimed at improving the well-being of Aboriginal peoples. The APS aims to provide current and relevant data for a variety of stakeholders, including Aboriginal organizations, communities, service providers, researchers, governments, and the general public.

The 2012 APS represents the fourth cycle of the survey and focuses on issues of education, employment and health of First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit aged 6 years and over.

The 2017 APS represents the fifth cycle of the survey and focuses on participation in the Canadian economy, transferable skills, practical training, use of information technology and Aboriginal language attainment of First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit aged 15 years and over.

To that end, when enough time has passed to allow for sufficient objectivity, it will again be time to document the agency’s next chapter as it continues to tell Canada’s story in numbers.

Description: This publication presents an overview of recent economic developments in the provinces and territories. The overview covers several broad areas: 1) gross domestic product (GDP) by income and by expenditure, 2) GDP by industry, 3) labour productivity and other related variables.

The publication examines trends in the major aggregates that comprise GDP, both income- and expenditure-based, as well as prices and the financing of economic activity by institutional sector. GDP is also examined by industry. The productivity estimates are meant to assist in the analysis of the short-run relationship among the fluctuations of output, employment, compensation and hours worked. Some issues also contain more technical articles, explaining national accounts methodology or analysing a particular aspect of the economy.
