- Articles and reports: 16-002-X202600100001Description: This article presents data on the extent and condition of Canada’s ocean and coastal ecosystems, as well as the ecosystem services—also known as “nature’s contributions to people”—they provide. Building on earlier pilot accounts, this article offers new physical and monetary estimates of ocean ecosystem services. It also marks the release of experimental monetary valuations of selected ocean ecosystem services, such as commercially harvested wild fish and seafood, nature-based tourism, and blue carbon sequestration.Release date: 2026-01-21
- Stats in brief: 11-627-M2026002Description: This infographic explores ocean and coastal ecosystems from a natural capital accounting perspective. It presents the extent of ocean and coastal areas, examines ocean condition through warming trends, and highlights ecosystem services such as fish and seafood harvests and the experimental monetary values of three selected ocean and coastal ecosystem services: commercial fishing, carbon sequestration, and nature-based tourism.Release date: 2026-01-21
- 3. Salt Marshes in Canada ArchivedStats in brief: 11-627-M2022064Description:
This infographic showcases selected data from the salt marsh ecosystems accounts, which provides a foundation for the development of salt marsh ecosystem accounts and will serve as guidance for the further development of coastal and ocean ecosystem accounts as part of the Census of Environment. These accounts will measure ecosystem extent, condition and services and follow the internationally accepted environmental accounting standard.

These accounts will measure ecosystem extent, condition and services and follow the internationally accepted environmental accounting standard.Release date: 2022-11-08
- Articles and reports: 16-002-X202100100001Description: This article provides estimates of the economic contribution of marine sectors in Canada in 2014 to 2018 and describes some of the environmental challenges faced by these sectors.Release date: 2021-07-19
- 6. Measuring ecosystem goods and services in Canada ArchivedArticles and reports: 16-201-X201300011875Description:
The article "Measuring ecosystem goods and services in Canada" presents preliminary results achieved through a two-year interdepartmental project to develop experimental ecosystem accounts and the required statistical infrastructure. It provides an overview of ecosystem accounting and valuation and presents several measures of the quantity and quality of ecosystems and ecosystem goods and services (EGS). These measures focus on land cover, human landscape modification, ecosystem potential of the boreal forest, biomass extraction, marine and coastal EGS, and wetland EGS. The report also includes a case study on the Thousand Islands National Park exploring monetary valuation of EGS and concludes with a research agenda for future work on this topic.
