Since 2000, a time when international export markets were weak, Canada's provincial and territorial economies have increased their reliance on interprovincial exports as a key source of economic growth. This is a marked contrast to the 1992 to 2000 period when international sales grew at a rapid rate and outpaced the gains in interprovincial exports. This article examines the performance of international and interprovincial exports for the Canadian provinces and territories during the last decade with a focus on the more recent period (2000 to 2002).

Presented here is an analysis of time use and quality of life that allows us to gain a better understanding of the new transitions young people in Canada are experiencing. Based on a gender analysis, the study shows the impact of paid work on young people's schedules while they are still in school, comparing those in high school with those at the postsecondary level. The same analysis is then applied to those having completed their transition to employment, where studying is no longer their main activity.

The results suggest that men and women encounter somewhat different experiences. One finding pertains to the pace of the transition. While young men enter the workforce earlier and work more intensely, young women experience a combination of several simultaneous transitions, such as entering a conjugal relationship and having children.

A second finding is related to the impact on time use of paid work while studying. The analysis reveals that re-organizing daily activities is not simply a matter of substituting work hours for study hours; many other areas are impacted by students working, such as sleep and active leisure time. The effects vary depending on the number of work hours. Women at the postsecondary level working more than 20 hours a week sacrifice more study time.

A third finding looks into changes in attitudes regarding school-to-work transitions. Quality of life and time perception indicators suggest that introducing paid work into young men's schedules is regarded as an overall improvement in their life. Young women, however, seem adversely affected, suggesting that they are more vulnerable to stress induced by schedule conflicts.

This issue of Juristat describes changes in drug offences and impaired driving in Canada. It provides a broad examination of the relationships between drug and alcohol use, and crime. Trends in drug offences reported by police are examined, as well as conviction and sentencing data for adult and youth court cases relating to drug possession and trafficking. It also summarizes offence trends in impaired driving. Finally, the report looks at the role of drug and/or alcohol consumption during the commission of spousal assault and other violent offences.

This paper examines the adoption of information and communication technology (ICT) in small and large firms and the technology gaps that exist between them. It covers the period from 1999 to 2002 and uses the Survey of Electronic Commerce and Technology.

Initially, incorporating ICT into a business was a challenge for many small firms because of the cost of the infrastructure and the inability to quickly adjust their business plans accordingly. More recently however, small firms in Canada have managed to close the technology gap between themselves and large firms regarding basic technologies such as personal computers, e-mail and Internet use.

Small firms continue to lag behind large firms in regard to implementing more complex technologies such as websites, intranets, extranets and online sales systems. The new challenge for small firms will be closing these technology gaps.

This paper investigates the link between financial structure and employment growth, and the link between financial structure and inventory growth, among incorporated Canadian manufacturers from 1988 to 1997. It finds that financially vulnerable firms - smaller firms and those with higher leverage - shed nearly 10% more labour than financially healthier firms for a given drop in product demand. The influence was larger during the recession of 1990 to 1992 indicating that higher financial vulnerability, reflected in high leverage, may have worsened during that period. The influence was also greater in sectors that experienced larger cyclical fluctuations. On average, firms with high leverage also tend to cut inventories 5% more when a shock in demand occurs.

Description: This study examined the impact of federal business innovation and growth support (BIGS) programs on firm financial performance measured using revenue, profit and employment metrics. Using Statistics Canada’s Business Linkable File Environment data, the study observed the effects of BIGS on exporting versus non-exporting firms and Canadian- versus U.S.-owned firms from 2015 to 2020. Unlike previous studies that relied mainly on survey data, one significant aspect of this research was the use of a new dataset, enabling panel data structures and models to be employed. To assess the impact of BIGS and research and development spending on three interrelated measures of firm financial performance, the CDM (Crépon et al., 1998) framework was adopted.

Description: Since Canada is a vast country with diverse job opportunities available in various locations, some provinces and territories may face challenges and opportunities in retaining and attracting young skilled talent. This article is the first to inform the issue by determining the share of youth who grew up in a certain province or territory and eventually obtained a postsecondary education but left to work in another province or territory. Using data from the 2022 Canadian Community Health Survey, this study examines the association of dental insurance with oral health care access and use in Canada while accounting for income and sociodemographic factors. It contributes to a baseline of oral health care disparities before the implementation of the Canadian Dental Care Plan.
