Description:

This paper presents data on technological change that have been made comparable from the Survey of Electronic Commerce and Technology (SECT) for 2000 and 2002. It shows that when comparable data for the 1998 to 2000 and 2000 to 2002 periods (based on the definition and survey universe employed by SECT 2000) are used, the propensity to adopt new technologies in the private sector has remained constant at about 40%. The rate of technology adoption in the public sector remained at four out of five organizations introducing significantly improved technologies (a level about twice as high as that for the private sector). This rate also shows little change from 2000. The paper presents the comparable technological change data, while explaining differences in the wording of the survey questions and universe between the two reference years. Information is provided for private and public sectors, selected employment size groups and sectors of both private and public sectors.

For 2002, the rate of technology adoption in the public sector stood at close to double that of the private sector: 82% versus 42%. Quite obviously, not all turn-of-the-century technological change within the public sector was directly linked to the Year 2000 phenomena. Rather, public sector organizations appear to refresh their technologies on a continual basis. It also appears that the public sector remains committed to supporting the acquisition of significantly improved technologies through training.

To provide context, comparisons are made with the private sector, with special attention given to employment size groups. The paper outlines the methods employed to acquire new technologies. It also provides an overview of three sectors within the public sector: educational services, health care and social services, and public administration.

Data from the 2001 Biotechnology Use and Development Survey reveal that there are 133 biotechnology Canadian-based firms manufacturing or developing bioproducts. These mostly private 'home-grown' firms, located in Quebec, British Columbia and Ontario, are operating across all economic sectors. The largest share of their combined portfolio of 805 bioproducts is at the commercialization stage. Bioprocessing-based bioproducts (products developed or made using enzymes and bacteria culture) lead the way.

The telecommunications services industry has propelled Canada into world leadership in information communication technology (ICT) development and use. The increasing connectivity of Canadian households, businesses and governments would not have been possible without the upgrades to infrastructure and the new services launched by this industry.

Firms in the service industry are more likely to adopt e-commerce and ICTs than those in primary or secondary industries. In addition, as a whole, public sector firms continue to have a higher rate of ICT use than firms in the private sector.

From the early 1950s to the mid-1990s, cable companies were the only businesses offering multi-channel video services, and these services represented much of their revenues. The penetration of cable services grew steadily over the period and peaked in the early 1990s. The introduction of competition from wireless operators has given new life to the industry and its clientele has expanded by more than 20% from 1997 to 2002. Wireless operator companies, which had virtually no customers in 1997, have captured a substantial share of the multi-channel video market. Cable operators have diversified and now play a major role in the Internet access market. Digital technology is gradually displacing analogue technologies.

The recent explosive demand for cell phones, personal computers and Internet access has propelled the growth of industries producing information and communication technologies (ICT) goods and services. With Quebec and Ontario accounting for over 85% of ICT manufacturing, the 'high-tech meltdown' was damaging to both provinces, dragging down an otherwise growing manufacturing sector in 2001 and chopping the growth in the 2002 recovery. Unlike manufacturing, the production of ICT services in all provinces exhibited robust growth rates from 1997 to 2002, providing a major source of growth to the service sector, as well as to the total gross domestic product (GDP).

Despite stagnating revenues, the telecommunication services industry improved its profits during the first half of 2003 by controlling operating costs and reducing capital spending. The industry recorded $2.6 billion in profits, up a robust 19.4%. A strong financial performance of the wireless sector was achieved in spite of a significant slowdown in the expansion of its customer base. The telecommunication services industry has continued to slash its capital expenditures. In the first six months of 2003, these expenditures amounted to $1.9 billion, down from $2.8 billion for the same period in 2002.

Description: This study examined the impact of federal business innovation and growth support (BIGS) programs on firm financial performance measured using revenue, profit and employment metrics. Using Statistics Canada’s Business Linkable File Environment data, the study observed the effects of BIGS on exporting versus non-exporting firms and Canadian- versus U.S.-owned firms from 2015 to 2020. Unlike previous studies that relied mainly on survey data, one significant aspect of this research was the use of a new dataset, enabling panel data structures and models to be employed. To assess the impact of BIGS and research and development spending on three interrelated measures of firm financial performance, the CDM (Crépon et al., 1998) framework was adopted.

This article uses data from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) and examines the degree to which Canadian-born and immigrant seniors aged 65 to 74 worked by choice or necessity in 2022.

Description: Since Canada is a vast country with diverse job opportunities available in various locations, some provinces and territories may face challenges and opportunities in retaining and attracting young skilled talent. This article is the first to inform the issue by determining the share of youth who grew up in a certain province or territory and eventually obtained a postsecondary education but left to work in another province or territory. The article also looks at young skilled workers who entered a province or territory to work, as a share of that province or territory’s initial population of homegrown young skilled labour.

Using data from the 2022 Canadian Community Health Survey, this study examines the association of dental insurance with oral health care access and use in Canada while accounting for income and sociodemographic factors.
