These presentations may be intended for conferences, meetings with stakeholders, or other events held throughout the year to provide Statistics Canada with an opportunity to promote the role of official statistics and to better understand data users’ needs. This series provides online access to these presentations as well as new presentations created to help communicate research findings on a wide range of subjects to a broad audience.

Description: Economic and Social Reports includes in-depth research, brief analyses, and current economic updates on a variety of topics, such as labour, immigration, education and skills, income mobility, well-being, aging, firm dynamics, productivity, economic transitions, and economic geography. Description: Individuals who are nearing death report a preference to be cared for and to die outside of hospital. The reasons for this preference are complex and multifactorial. This study examined differences in the use of end-of-life acute care and the location of death among residents with dementia in rural long-term care homes, compared with those in urban long-term care homes, in Ontario, Canada.

Description: Mental health disparity is associated with diverse characteristics, such as gender, socioeconomic status, Indigenous identity, immigrant status, race, disability, and sexual orientation. However, intersectional studies on women’s mental health have been rare, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic period. To fill this research gap, this study examines women’s and girls’ self-reported mental health before and during the COVID-19 pandemic using seven characteristics, including Indigenous identity, immigrant status, racialized background, LGB+ sexual orientation, disability, and socioeconomic status (low income and unemployment).

In just over a decade, the cellular telephone industry has grown to close to one fifth the size of the traditional teletphone segment of the industry, experiencing an annual revenue growth rate between 22% and 29%. By December 1997, there were just over 4 million cellular telephone subscribers in Canada - a 22% increase over the previous year - more than double the level of subscribers in 1994.

In a recent Statistics Canada survey, 77% of Canadian plant managers felt their production technology was as good as their domestic competitors. Against their U.S. counterparts, they were less confident: only 57% of Canadian firms believed their technologies were as good as their American competitors. The survey also reveals that 70% firms used the Internet and 60% had a "home page" on the World Wide Web.

In 1996, larger financial services companies were the most likely to use the Internet for communications, research and e-commerce. During that year, 73% of banks were using the Internet whereas less than half of the property and casualty insurance companies were connected. E-commerce was undertaken by only 17% of the connected firms whereas 70% was using e-mail and 86% was conducting web searches. Internet users were more innovative and introduced more new products than non-users.
