  • 511. Empirical Bayes estimation of small area proportions based on ordinal outcome variables Archived

    Description:

    Much research has been conducted into the modelling of ordinal responses. Some authors argue that, when the response variable is ordinal, inclusion of ordinality in the model to be estimated should improve model performance. Under the condition of ordinality, Campbell and Donner (1989) compared the asymptotic classification error rate of the multinominal logistic model to that of the ordinal logistic model of Anderson (1984). They showed that the ordinal logistic model had a lower expected asymptotic error rate than the multinominal logistic model. This paper also aims to compare the performance of ordinal and multinomial logistic models for ordinal responses. However, rather than focussing on classification efficiency, the assessment is made in the context of an application where the objective is to estimate small area proportions. More specifically, using multinominal and ordinal logistic models, the empirical Bayes approach proposed by Farrell, MacGibbon and Tomberlin (1997a) for estimating small area proportions based on binomial outcome data is extended to response variables consisting of more than two outcome categories. The properties of estimators based on these two models are compared via a simulation study in which the empirical Bayes methods proposed here are applied to data from the 1950 United States Census with the objective of predicting, for a small area, the proportion of individuals who belong to the various categories of an ordinal response variable representing income level.

    This article seeks to shed light on the early careers of science and engineering graduates over the last decade in Canada. It examines the evolution of employment patterns, earnings levels and other employment indicators of recent graduates, as well as their ability to find meaningful and satisfying work and to set out on rewarding and productive careers. The analysis is based on three cohorts of the National Graduates Survey (NGS) databases, which consist of large, representative samples of Canadian university graduates who completed their programs in 1982, 1986 and 1990 respectively. Each group was interviewed two and five years after graduation.

    The abuse of children and youth in the family is a serious concern for Canadians. Child abuse and neglect often result in physical, emotional and developmental problems which can affect the victims throughout their lives. There are currently no national estimates of child abuse in Canada. Only those incidents that come to the attention of officials, such as the police and child welfare agencies, are known. Efforts to understand the nature and the scope of child abuse should therefore take into account the fact that available data reflect only a portion of the total. This Juristat uses statistical databases of police reported incidents across Canada to describe what is currently known from a criminal justice perspective about violence against children and youth in the family. Although these police reported incidents account for only a portion of all abuse that occurs, they nonetheless provide an important tool for profiling the more serious cases. For the purposes of this analysis, "children" include all young persons under 18 years of age, and "family members" include persons related to the victim by kniship, either through blood, marriage, common-law or adoption, as well as legal guardians such as foster parents.

    Description:

    From a U.K. perspective, the Boskin Report raises no new issues; it simply gives some issues greater prominence. AT the U.K.'s Office for National Statistics, as in other national statistical agencies around the world, a substantial amount of research has been conducted over a number of years into methodology associated with consumer prices indices, and this work is continuing. Our view is that the Retail Prices Index (RPI) presently remains the most accurate single measure of consumer inflation in the U.K. It is produced using the best available methodology following advice from an independent RPI advisory committee. We believe that many of the issues raised in the Boskin Report for the U.S.A. have less in the U.K. This view is also shared by a number of independent commentators. Nevertheless, along with many other countries, we are undertaking further research and analysis to investigate the issues raised.

    In 1997, there will be an estimated 130,800 new cases of cancer and 60,700 deaths from the disease, an increase of one third and one quarter, respectively, over 1987. These increases are due mainly to the growth and aging of the population. (All figures exclude non-melanoma skin cancer.) In 1997, three types of cancer will account for at least half of all new cases in men and women: prostate, lung and colorectal cancer for men; breast, lung and colorectal cancer for women. Lung cancer will be the leading cause of cancer death in 1997, resulting in one-third of cancer deaths for men and almost one-quarter of cancer deaths for women. Among women, overall trends in age-standardized rates of cancer incidence and mortality have remained relatively stable since 1985, as large increases in the rate of lung cancer have been offset by declining or stable rates for most other forms. Among men, the overall incidence rate is rising slightly as a result of the sharp increase in the incidence of prostate cancer. The mortality rate for men peaked in 1988 and has since declined, because of decreases in the rates for lung, colorectal and some other cancers. This article presents information on trends since the mid-1980s in cancer incidence and mortality, adapted from Canadian Cancer Statistics 1987.

    Results from the Current Population Survey split panel studies indicated a centralized computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) effect on labor force estimates. One hypothesis is that the CATI interviewing increased the probability of respondent's changing their reported labor force status. The two sample McNemar test is appropriate for testing this type of hypothesis: the hypothesis of interest is that the marginal changes in each of two independent sample's tables are equal. We show two adaptations of this test to complex survey data, along with applications from the Current Population Survey's Parallel Survey split data and from the Current Population Survey's CATI Phase-in data.

    This study provides a detailed analysis of findings based on the 1998 General Social Survey on Time Use, with some analysis of trends over time using the 1986 and 1992 time use surveys. It addresses the question of how life transitions affect time use patterns and quality of life indicators.

    Like other resources, time is finite. Unlike other resources, time is shared equally by everyone. The trade-offs people make between competing activities depend largely on the nature of their roles and obligations at each stage of life. These trade-offs say a great deal about a person's lifestyle, preferences and choices, or lack of choice. However, the life cycle has lost the uniformity and formality that it once had. Life-course patterns are now more diverse, and the transitions themselves are more likely to be experienced as extended and complex processes rather than as distinct events. Thus, it becomes important to study the impact of various life transitions on time use and quality of life.

    This study examines the following life transitions, with a focus on a comparison of the experiences of women and men:- transition from school to employment- transitions related to union formation and parenthood- transition to retirement- transitions associated with aging: widowhood and changes in living arrangements

    This report presents results from the Survey of 1995 Graduates Who Moved to the United States. Both the survey and this report were conducted in partnership between Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) and Statistics Canada. The survey covered post-secondary graduates from the class of '95 who moved to the U.S. between graduation and the summer of 1997. These graduates were surveyed to obtain information on their characteristics, reasons for relocating to the U.S., education and work experiences, and plans for the future.
