    Description: This article summarizes findings from an upcoming study in American Economic Journal: Applied Economics that compares absolute intergenerational income mobility rates – the fraction of adult children in the population whose income is higher than that earned by their parents at the same age, in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Finland. This article also discusses the findings of a pilot study in Measuring Distribution and Mobility of Income and Wealth which examines the impact of parental education on the transmission of income between generations using census data from the Intergenerational Income Database.

    Description: Investing in a postsecondary education is one of the most important decisions made by people over their lifetime. Understanding the potential outcomes associated with specific postsecondary academic programs may help inform young people, but most of the available information focuses on earnings. While important, earnings say little about what postsecondary graduates are likely to do in their career, which may factor heavily in their decision-making process. This article presents the most prevalent jobs held by graduates of Canadian bachelor’s degree programs aged 25 to 34 using the 2021 Census of Population.

    Description: Different industrial sectors depend on temporary foreign workers (TFWs) to varying degrees because of unique levels of labour shortages and specific skill requirements. Analyzing the role of TFWs across industrial sectors in Canada provides empirical evidence to inform the formulation of policies and strategies that support the needs of Canadian businesses and the well-being of TFWs. This article uses linked administrative data to analyze the distribution of TFWs across industries and their proportion in the workforce within each industry from 2010 to 2020.

    Description: Canada and the United States share a deep economic relationship that contributes to most measures of their economic performances having a tight common trend over the long term. However, a notable exception is the increasing disparity in labour productivity growth between the two nations.     Description: The validity of survival estimates from cancer registry data depends, in part, on the identification of the deaths of deceased cancer patients. People whose deaths are missed seemingly live on forever and are informally referred to as “immortals”, and their presence in registry data can result in inflated survival estimates. This study assesses the issue of immortals in the Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) using a recently proposed method that compares the survival of long-term survivors of cancers for which “statistical” cure has been reported with that of similar people from the general population.

    Description: In 2015 The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada placed child well-being foremost in their Calls to Action list and within Action 19 called upon the federal government to identify gaps in health between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, including measures of long-term trends. Based on the 2006 and 2011 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHECs), this study extends previous work by separately reporting the hospitalization rates for two cohorts of First Nations children and youth living on or off reserve, Métis children and youth, and Inuit children and youth living in Inuit Nunangat (excluding Nunavik), relative to the rates among non-Indigenous children and youth.

With several breakdowns available along the theme of rural and urban areas, the RCBP version released by Statistics Canada on January 13, 2023, provides data for 2020. Future updates of the RCBP, expected to be produced on an annual basis, will add more recent years as fresh data become available. The RCBP could be a useful and timely analytical tool in efforts to gain insights on trends and transformations in the rural business environment just as the economy enters the post-pandemic period.
