Description: This report is a product of the Pan-Canadian Education Indicators Program (PCEIP). It is intended to facilitate the comparison of educational systems in Canada's provinces and territories with those of countries that belong to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The document presents a series of indicators harmonized to the definitions and methodologies used by the OECD in Education at a Glance. The indicators are designed to serve as a basis for decision making and for development of programs in the field of education.

PCEIP is an ongoing initiative of the Canadian Education Statistics Council: a partnership between Statistics Canada and the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada, that provides a set of statistical measures on education systems.

Using data from the Longitudinal and International Study of Adults, this infographic shows the relationship between the income of adult Canadians and the income of their parents when they were growing up. Additionally, it highlights that families with higher incomes were also families where parents were more highly educated, while families with lower incomes were more likely to have a non-official language as their mother tongue or to be lone-parent families.

Using data from the last four cycles of the National Graduates Survey (NGS), this study examines changes in the proportion of students with student debt over time, as well as the median amount of debt at graduation. Also, focussing on the 2015 cohort of graduates, the study examines the debt by field of study and by sources of financing, as well as the link between the characteristics of the students with student debt at graduation and the reduction of their debt three years after.

Black populations are compared with the rest of the population along two dimensions: sex and generation status.

This Juristat examines the characteristics and socioeconomic circumstances of young offenders who participated in the Nova Scotia Restorative Justice Program in 2009/2010. Drawing on information from tax data and the 2016 Census of Population, this analysis provides information on economic and social marginalization which may have contributed to their offending, as well as some of the challenges they continued to face in young adulthood. In particular, differences between the circumstances of male and female offenders are shown.

This booklet examines the socioeconomic situation of the Black population in Canada and focusses primarily on the education and labour market outcomes as well as family structures of the Black population in comparison to the rest of the population. In addition, the perceptions of Black individuals in the labour force, their experiences with discrimination and their resiliency will be examined. Data from the Census as well as the General Social Survey have been used and have been disaggregated by sex for the Black population and the rest of the population.

This study uses the 1996 and 2011 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHECs), with a five-year mortality follow-up, to estimate the life expectancy (LE) of the household population. It also incorporates information from two national health surveys to estimate health-adjusted life expectancy (HALE). The objectives of this study are to examine LE, HALE and disparities in LE and HALE in the 1996 and 2011 cohorts at ages 25 and 65 for men and women, according to highest level of educational attainment and household income quintile; to examine these disparities according to the combination of education and income in the 2011 cohort; and to examine how education- and income-related disparities in LE and HALE changed over time.

The routine measurement of population health status indicators like mortality is important to assess progress in the reduction of inequalities. Previous studies of mortality inequalities have relied on area-based measures of socioeconomic indicators. A new series of census-mortality linked datasets has been created in Canada to quantify mortality inequalities based on individual-level data and examine whether these inequalities have changed over time. This study used the 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2011 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHECs) with five years of mortality follow-up. It estimated age-standardized mortality rates by sex according to income quintile and highest level of educational attainment categories for the household population aged 25 or older.

In recent decades, women’s educational attainment has increased significantly in Canada. In 2016, 40.7% of young women aged 25 to 34 reported having a bachelor's degree or higher, up from 32.8% in 2006. By comparison, 29.1% of young men aged 25 to 34 reported having a bachelor's degree or higher, up from 24.8% in 2006. This short study discusses gender-based differences in desired level of educational attainment for students, as well as obstacles encountered in school.

Description:

Starting in 1994, the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) will follow individuals and families for at least six years, tracking their labour market experiences, changes in income and family circumstances. An initial proposal for the content of SLID, entitled Content of the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics : Discussion Paper, was distributed in February 1992.

That paper served as a background document for consultation wit h interested users. The content underwent significant change during this process. Based upon the revised content, a large-scale test of SLID will be conducted in February and May 1993.

This document outlines the current demographic and labour content, leading into the test.
