This paper examines whether individuals in population groups of interest—specifically individuals in low-income families, those in single-parent families, those with mood or anxiety disorders, those in designated visible minorities categories and immigrants—tend to reside in neighbourhoods with different characteristics. It does so by using a new, integrated dataset that incorporates neighbourhood measures from multiple sources with the Canadian Community Health Survey.

A variety of different factors impact the ability of Canadian businesses to operate. These factors are also found when looking at business owners, as different segments of the population face different challenges as owners of businesses. This article explores the environment that businesses majority-owned by women, First Nations, Métis or Inuit persons, immigrants to Canada and visible minorities are currently operating in and their expectations moving forward. This article examines how differences in various factors and obstacles are perceived by these businesses.

The labour market outcomes of recently arrived immigrants are often more negatively affected during recessions than those of the Canadian-born. Entering the labour market during a recession may also result in “scarring” effects for both immigrants and Canadian-born workers—the notion that the effects of entering a labour market during a period of high unemployment persists years into the future. However, the severity and characteristics of recessions vary significantly and may affect immigrants’ outcomes differently. This paper compares immigrants’ outcomes during the past three recessions.

Since the 1990s, Canadian immigration policy has emphasized human capital, particularly education and language proficiency, in the selection of economic immigrants. While immigration and the domestic educational system continuously increase the supply of a university-educated labour force, there has been concern that skilled trades are an often-overlooked career option for many secondary school graduates, and that this may lead to labour shortages in skilled trades. Immigrants with a bachelor’s degree or higher are more adaptable to changes in the labour market and have steeper growth in employment earnings than those with a trades or high school education. Description: The pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on the Canadian economy. This impact was uneven across different workers and businesses. However, there is little information available on how businesses were affected by and survived through the pandemic according to the characteristics of their owners, especially those owned by certain groups such as women and immigrants. This article uses a linkage of the monthly business openings and closures with the Canadian Employer-Employee Dynamics Database and the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy to study the survival rate and employment growth of businesses by gender, and immigrant status of owners.

Some find it necessary to keep working because of inadequate retirement savings, mortgage payments, unforeseen expenses, or the responsibility to support children and other family members in Canada or abroad.
