    Description:

    This Juristat examines the characteristics and socioeconomic circumstances of young offenders who participated in the Nova Scotia Restorative Justice Program in 2009/2010. Drawing on information from tax data and the 2016 Census of Population, this analysis provides information on economic and social marginalization which may have contributed to their offending, as well as some of the challenges they continued to face in young adulthood. In particular, differences between the circumstances of male and female offenders are shown.

    This study uses the 1996 and 2011 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHECs), with a five-year mortality follow-up, to estimate the life expectancy (LE) of the household population. It also incorporates information from two national health surveys to estimate health-adjusted life expectancy (HALE). The objectives of this study are to examine LE, HALE and disparities in LE and HALE in the 1996 and 2011 cohorts at ages 25 and 65 for men and women, according to highest level of educational attainment and household income quintile; to examine these disparities according to the combination of education and income in the 2011 cohort; and to examine how education- and income-related disparities in LE and HALE changed over time.

    Description:

    The routine measurement of population health status indicators like mortality is important to assess progress in the reduction of inequalities. Previous studies of mortality inequalities have relied on area-based measures of socioeconomic indicators. A new series of census-mortality linked datasets has been created in Canada to quantify mortality inequalities based on individual-level data and examine whether these inequalities have changed over time. This study used the 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2011 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHECs) with five years of mortality follow-up. It estimated age-standardized mortality rates by sex according to income quintile and highest level of educational attainment categories for the household population aged 25 or older.

    Description:

    The educational attainment of the Canadian population has been rising rapidly in recent decades. There is concern that educational expansion has outpaced demand, leading to an increased prevalence of over-education. Over-education is defined as educational qualification that exceeds what is required to adequately perform the job. This study uses census data to document the rising supply of university-educated workers by immigration status from 2001 to 2016. It further examines trends in over-education among university-educated workers who are recent immigrants (those who arrived in Canada 1 to 10 years before the census) and those who are Canadian-born youth (aged 25 to 34). For each population group, this study examines the extent to which the observed trend in over-education status is associated with changes in demographic characteristics and supply and demand factors.

    Starting in 1994, the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) will follow individuals and families for at least six years, tracking their labour market experiences, changes in income and family circumstances. An initial proposal for the content of SLID, entitled Content of the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics : Discussion Paper, was distributed in February 1992.

    That paper served as a background document for consultation wit h interested users. The content underwent significant change during this process. Based upon the revised content, a large-scale test of SLID will be conducted in February and May 1993.

    This document outlines the current demographic and labour content, leading into the test.
