International migration has become increasingly fluid and is viewed decreasingly as a one-time, permanent movement from a source country to a destination country. Immigrant-receiving countries often point to long-term economic- and population-related goals as motivations for permanent immigration programs, making immigrants’ presence and absence patterns of increasing policy interest. This article explores two methodological issues related to measuring immigrants’ potential presence in Canada. The first is the use of auxiliary administrative data sources as a means to supplement the T1 Income Tax Return file, which—to date—has been one of the key data sources used to estimate emigration among Canadian immigrants. The second is the evaluation of the sensitivity of emigration estimates to the definition of immigrant disappearance and reappearance in administrative data.

This study investigates the extent to which stressful life events may increase the likelihood of food insecurity among the Canadian adult population. Data from the Wave 4 (2018) of the Longitudinal and International Study of Adults (LISA) and multivariable logistic models were used for the analyses, taking into account the complex survey design and adjusting for other socio-demographic and socio-economic variables known to be associated with food insecurity. The results show that work and health-related stressful life events significantly increase the likelihood of exposure to food insecurity. The results also show that adults who reported having two or more stressful life events were about four times more likely to experience food insecurity than those who reported zero stressful life events.

This study analyzes the determinants of entry into business ownership (defined as ownership of private incorporated businesses). Entrants into business ownership are defined as individuals who were primarily business owners in 2016, but not in 2015. An individual can become an entrant by starting an enterprise or acquiring shares of an existing private enterprise. Using a matched employer–employee database over the 2011-to-2016 period for approximately 24 million individuals, this study assesses the role of factors including personal characteristics, labour market experience and family characteristics.

With the conclusion of the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) and the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) in September 2020, the federal government launched new assistance programs to ensure that Canadians continue to receive the financial support that they need during the pandemic. Replacing the CERB are three programs: the Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB), the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB) and the Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit (CRCB). Replacing the CECRA is the Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS). While the CERB replacement measures will be reflected as transfers to households, CERS will be impacting businesses, non-profits and charities and will be reflected as subsidies on production in the case of businesses and as transfers in the case of non-profits. The impact of these four new programs will be reflected in the national accounts estimates starting with the 2020Q4 GDP release on March 2, 2021.
An earlier document on the treatment of COVID-19 measures in the national accounts was published at the same time as the GDP release for the second quarter of 2020 on August 28, 2020.

The Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB) is a comprehensive source of data that plays a key role in the understanding of the economic behaviour of immigrants. It is the only annual Canadian dataset that allows users to study the characteristics of immigrants to Canada at the time of admission and their economic outcomes and regional (inter-provincial) mobility over a time span of more than 35 years. The IMDB includes Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) administrative records which contain exhaustive information about immigrants who were admitted to Canada since 1952. It also includes data about non-permanent residents who have been issued temporary resident permits since 1980. This report will discuss the IMDB data sources, concepts and variables, record linkage, data processing, dissemination, data evaluation and quality indicators, comparability with other immigration datasets, and the analyses possible with the IMDB.

Multinational enterprises (MNEs) have been drivers of globalization. These enterprises have taken advantage of innovations in logistics and communications technology over the past four decades to diversify their supply chains and expand into new markets. Operating internationally, however, also allows MNEs to take advantage of tax systems which were designed for a less integrated era. For example, MNEs can arrange for profits to be 'shifted' by charging affiliates in high tax locations prices above market rates in transactions with affiliates in lower tax regions. These behaviours are referred to as base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS), and, although not illegal, they impact government revenues worldwide.

These findings are based on questions asked for each disability type covered in the 2017 Canadian Survey on Disability (CSD). The age of onset and age of limitation are examined by different characteristics, including sex, severity of disability and age group.

The Report on the Demographic Situation in Canada has been published annually or biennially since 1985. Beginning in 2011, the Report is available as a dynamic, internet-only publication in order to provide the most recent data and analyses on Canadian demographics as soon as they are available.
