Despite extensive research on health disparities, a limited number of studies have examined First Nations people’s mortality on a national scale, particularly those examining specific causes of death. This analysis attempts to fill the information gap using linked mortality data from the 2006 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohort to calculate the number and rates of deaths for a 10-year follow-up period for on- and off-reserve First Nations people and the non-Indigenous population, by sex, age and region.

Beginning in 2011, the Report is available as a dynamic, internet-only publication in order to provide the most recent data and analyses on Canadian demographics as soon as they are available.

This study seeks to measure the reduction in life expectancy at birth as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic, both nationally and in affected provinces. In Canada, deaths attributed to COVID-19 contribute to a projected reduction in life expectancy at birth of 0.41 years in 2020. Estimates of life expectancy in 2020, which will be available at a later date, will show both the direct and indirect effects of the pandemic.

Currently, Statistics Canada does not provide a geographic unit representative of downtown neighbourhoods within its standard geographic classification. The objective of this article is to identify areas which accurately represent the downtowns located in the census metropolitan areas (CMA) of Canada, using Censuses of Population and local knowledge. These boundaries will allow a more effective dissemination of essential statistics by Statistics Canada, especially in the context of future census data releases.

International migration has become increasingly fluid and is viewed decreasingly as a one-time, permanent movement from a source country to a destination country. Immigrant-receiving countries often point to long-term economic- and population-related goals as motivations for permanent immigration programs, making immigrants’ presence and absence patterns of increasing policy interest. This article explores two methodological issues related to measuring immigrants’ potential presence in Canada. The first is the use of auxiliary administrative data sources as a means to supplement the T1 Income Tax Return file, which—to date—has been one of the key data sources used to estimate emigration among Canadian immigrants. The second is the evaluation of the sensitivity of emigration estimates to the definition of immigrant disappearance and reappearance in administrative data.

It reveals that CNU rates are relatively low and stable over time. However, CNU rates fluctuate based on population characteristics. These rates are higher among young adults, particularly men, individuals who live in the territories or on Indian reserves, those who are separated or single, and those whose mother tongue is a language other than English or French. Canadian CNU rates and the characteristics of harder-to-enumerate populations are similar to what is observed internationally.
