This dashboard presents selected data that are relevant for monitoring the impacts of COVID-19 on economic activity in Canada. It includes data on a range of monthly indicators - real GDP, consumer prices, the unemployment rate, merchandise exports and imports, retail sales, hours worked and manufacturing sales -- as well as monthly data on aircraft movements, railway carloadings, and travel between Canada and other countries.

Estimates are presented from January 2019 to the current reference month for each data series. The information will be updated continuously as new data becomes available, and additional series may be added to the dashboard as circumstances warrant.

To support the analysis of time series movements in the data, the dashboard reports changes in each series on both a month-over-month and year-over-year basis. For most of the variables reported, information on cumulative changes in the data both prior and subsequent to the end of 2019 is also presented by indexing the level estimates to December 2019, as depicted in the accompanying charts.

In the aftermath of 9/11, a new security regime was imposed on Canada–U.S. truck-borne trade, raising the question of whether the border has ‘thickened.’ Did the cost of moving goods across the border by truck rise? If so, by how much, and have these additional costs persisted through time? Building on previous work that measured the premium paid by shippers to move goods across the Canada–U.S. border by truck, from the mid- to late 2000s, this paper extends the time series back to 1994, encompassing the pre- and post-9/11 eras.

This project is an evidence-based measurement of mobility for key corridors in our urban centers across Canada. Transport Canada computes a mobility indicator to assess the impact of urban bottlenecks in Canada’s strategic trade corridors and the economy. This information is important for practitioners and policymakers as it goes beyond anecdotal evidence on a subject affecting millions of Canadians and our trade corridors. The mobility indicator in question is the Travel Time Index (TTI). It is the ratio of the measured travel time to the free-flow travel time. Free-flow travel time is measured overnight, when drivers are free to drive at their desired speed because of low volume traffic conditions.
