Statistics Canada is proud to release the Grain Supply Chain Dashboard: Real-time Grain Movement by Rail. This interactive map displays the daily movement of grain, detailing estimates of tonnage flows per unit of time, along segments of the railway network, stations, and ports.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by Statistics Canada to provide real-time statistical information about issues affecting supply chains in Canada.

The interactive dashboard will be updated on a daily basis (with a one-day lag). The dashboard brings together data from multiple sources and displays three main indicators; number of cars entering, en route, and exiting at the corridor level; car's daily last known station; and 48-hour or more dwelling time of cars.

The Grain Supply Chain Dashboard has been developed in partnership with the Ag Transport Coalition.

Note to readers

The Grain Supply Chain Dashboard relies on real-time data providing information on the movement of Canadian grains by rail. More specifically, the number of cars in corridors and cars unloaded at destinations shows the total daily number of cars in all major corridors, as well as loads released at final destinations per corridor.

Each car's last known location is recorded each day and displayed at the train station level.

When a car is idle at a train station for more than 48 hours that car is categorized as dwelling. Each train station shows how many cars are currently dwelling there each day.

Due to the real time processing of data and differences between the methodologies, metrics presented may have marginal discrepancies with aggregate figures from original sources.

How to use

How to use this interactive visual

The world map is the main interactive component displayed on the dashboard. Users can move around the map using click and drag. The scroll wheel on the mouse, or the + and - buttons on the map, can be used to zoom in and out of the map. Each red circle plotted on the map is the location of a railway station that has cars dwelling for 48 hours or more. Each blue circle plotted on the map is location of a railway station that had the last know location of a railway car. Clicking a red circle or blue circle will reveal information about the station at that location including station name and number of railway cars. To view the grain elevators and train stations on the map the layers must be turned on by the user. Clicking on the grain elevator and train station icons will display more information about ownership, car spot availability and more. All popups text boxes can be closed by clicking the x in the popup. Additionally, clicking a red circle will display a line chart containing the traffic count data for the corresponding camera. The Province drop-down selector is used to move to a different province for which railway data is available. Of note the National Corridor Information table only displays national data and will not change when a province is selected, changing the date will update the table. A Date Range selector is available that allows the user to select what day to view data of.
