    Description:

This dashboard presents selected data that are relevant for monitoring the impacts of COVID-19 on economic activity in Canada. It includes data on a range of monthly indicators - real GDP, consumer prices, the unemployment rate, merchandise exports and imports, retail sales, hours worked and manufacturing sales -- as well as monthly data on aircraft movements, railway carloadings, and travel between Canada and other countries.

Estimates are presented from January 2019 to the current reference month for each data series. The information will be updated continuously as new data becomes available, and additional series may be added to the dashboard as circumstances warrant.

To support the analysis of time series movements in the data, the dashboard reports changes in each series on both a month-over-month and year-over-year basis. For most of the variables reported, information on cumulative changes in the data both prior and subsequent to the end of 2019 is also presented by indexing the level estimates to December 2019, as depicted in the accompanying charts.

Public health measures first enacted in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic prompted a massive shift to remote work and learning, contributing to historic year-over-year transit ridership declines in the months that followed. Using data from the Monthly Passenger Bus and Urban Transit Survey and the Labour Force Survey, this study traces the impact of working from home on the number of public transit passengers and points to other data that may help to shape a new normal for the public transit industry.

    Description:

The increase in telework observed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic shows that far more workers are able to work from home than had been observed prior to the pandemic.

The economic costs of the pandemic to this point have been significant and pervasive, both in Canada and other countries. However, the rapid labour market adjustment to telework offers some potential longer-term benefits for a variety of reasons. More broadly, from urban planning and environmental perspectives, more widespread adoption of telework would result in less commuter traffic and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study estimates the extent to which commuter traffic would decrease, which modes of transportation would see the largest decreases and the resulting implications for GHG emissions if the Canadian economy were to operate at its maximum telework capacity, expressed relative to the commuter levels that prevailed before the pandemic.

  • Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 23-26-0001
    Description:

This project is an evidence-based measurement of mobility for key corridors in our urban centers across Canada. Transport Canada computes a mobility indicator to assess the impact of urban bottlenecks in Canada’s strategic trade corridors and the economy. This information is important for practitioners and policymakers as it goes beyond anecdotal evidence on a subject affecting millions of Canadians and our trade corridors. The mobility indicator in question is the Travel Time Index (TTI). It is the ratio of the measured travel time to the free-flow travel time. Free-flow travel time is measured overnight, when drivers are free to drive at their desired speed because of low volume traffic conditions.
