Description: Over the last several years, recreational screen time has been increasing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, recreational screen time rose among Canadian youth and adults, and those who increased screen time had poorer self-reported mental health. Using data from the 2017, 2018, and 2021 Canadian Community Health Survey, the objective of this study was to compare recreational screen time behaviours before (2018) and during (2021) the pandemic, looking at patterns by sociodemographic subgroups of the Canadian population.

Description: The availability of measures to operationalize allostatic load—the cumulative toll on the body of responding to stressor demands—in population health surveys may differ across years or surveys, hampering analyses on the entire sampled population. In this study, the impacts of variable selection and calculation method were evaluated to generate an allostatic load index applicable across all cycles of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS). CHMS data were used to compare individual and population-level changes in scores for allostatic load indexes in which other commonly used measures were substituted for waist-to-hip ratio. Associations between the various constructs and indicators of socioeconomic position were then assessed to evaluate whether relationships were maintained across indexes.

It is designed for a broad audience that includes health professionals, researchers, policymakers, and the general public. The journal publishes articles of wide interest that contain original and timely analyses of national or provincial/territorial surveys or administrative databases. New articles are published electronically each month.

Health Reports had an impact factor of 5.0 for 2022 and a five-year impact factor of 5.6. All articles are indexed in PubMed. Our online catalogue is free and receives more than 700,000 visits per year. External submissions are welcome.

Description: As Canada continues to experience an opioid crisis, it is important to understand the intersection between the demographic, socioeconomic and service use characteristics of those experiencing opioid overdoses to better inform prevention and treatment programs. This study aims to identify distinct groups of individuals with unique sets of characteristics and experiences among those who had an opioid overdose in British Columbia between 2014 and 2016.

Description: Previous studies examining the cardiometabolic risks associated with physical activity (PA) in workers have predominantly used self-reported measures. Little is known about workers’ distinct daily PA patterns and whether these are linked with cardiometabolic risks. This study examined associations between patterns of workers’ accelerometer-measured daily PA and four markers of cardiometabolic health. Furthermore, the study examined similarities and differences between younger compared to middle-aged and older workers, and between men and women, to understand whether these groups are associated with different cardiometabolic risks.

Mortality patterns for some groups, including Black individuals, are not as well known. The objective of this study was to assess cause-specific mortality for Black adults living in Canada. However, some research has suggested that online digital media use may be negatively associated with mental health. Using data from 13,600 adolescents aged 12-17 drawn from the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth, the purpose of the present study was to examine differential associations between different types of online digital media use and mental health among Canadian adolescents.

Utility score norms have been published for Canadian adults, but no nationally representative utility score norms are available for non-adults. Using Health Utilities Index Mark 3 (HUI3) data from two recent cycles of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (i.e., 2016-2017 and 2018-2019), this is the first study to provide utility score norms for children aged 6 to 11 years and adolescents aged 12 to 17 years.

The stage of cancer at diagnosis is an important determinant of survival, reflecting the extent and spread at the time of disease detection. The recent extension of the Canadian Cancer Registry death-linked analytic file from 2014 to 2017 now offers an opportunity to provide more up-to-date net survival (NS) figures and to profile, for the first time, five-year NS estimates for Canada (excluding Quebec). This study presents five-year stage-specific cancer and five-year NS estimates for the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Canada.

Based on the 2006 and 2011 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHECs), this study extends previous work by separately reporting the hospitalization rates for two cohorts of First Nations children and youth living on or off reserve, Métis children and youth, and Inuit children and youth living in Inuit Nunangat (excluding Nunavik), relative to the rates among non-Indigenous children and youth.

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus in adults is increasing in Canada and worldwide, due to population aging as well as various social, environmental, and genetic factors. The objective of this study was to examine different individual and neighbourhood characteristics and their independent associations with risk of hospitalization for diabetes (type 1 or type 2) and selected commonly comorbid conditions among the high-risk Canadian adult population.

The mandate of the Analytical Studies Branch (ASB) is to provide high-quality, relevant and timely information on economic, health and social issues that are important to Canadians. The branch strategically makes use of expert knowledge and a large range of statistical sources to describe, draw inferences from, and make objective and scientifically supported deductions about the evolving nature of the Canadian economy and society. Research questions are addressed by applying leading-edge methods, including microsimulation and predictive analytics using a range of linked and integrated administrative and survey data. In supporting greater access to data, ASB linked data are made available to external researchers and policy makers to support evidence-based decision making. Research results are disseminated by the branch using a range of mediums (i.e., research papers, studies, infographics, videos, and blogs) to meet user needs. The branch also provides analytical support and training, feedback, and quality assurance to the wide range of programs within and outside Statistics Canada.

This paper describes the process that led to the creation of the new Disability Screening Questions (DSQ), jointly developped by Statistics Canada and Employment and Social Development Canada. The DSQ form a new module which can be put on general population surveys to allow comparisons of persons with and without a disability. The paper explains why there are two versions of the DSQ—a long and a short one—, the difference between the two, and how each version can be used.
