Description: This article examines the experiences Indigenous women in Canada, and where possible provides results for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Indigenous identity groups. The focus is on experiences of violent victimization and perceptions of neighbourhood, safety, and the criminal justice system. The prevalence of gender-based violent victimization in Canada is examined using self-reported data from the 2018 Survey of Safety in Public and Private Spaces. Data from the 2019 General Social Survey (GSS) on Canadians’ Safety (Victimization) is used to explore confidence in police and criminal courts, as well as perceptions of neighbourhood cohesion and disorder. In addition, homicide data highlights the prevalence and characteristics of homicide of Indigenous women in Canada.

Indigenous people represent one of the youngest populations in Canada. On average, Indigenous people were 8.4 years younger than the non-Indigenous population in 2016. Youth aged 15 to 24 years make up one sixth of the entire Indigenous population (16.9%). This chapter examines the demographic, familial, educational, economic, health and cultural characteristics of Indigenous youth aged 15 to 24. Data are largely taken from the 2016 Census of Population and the 2017 Aboriginal Peoples Survey.

This article presents results from the Canadian Survey on Business Conditions in the context of businesses majority-owned by women, First Nations, Métis or Inuit persons, immigrants to Canada, and visible minorities. Differences were noted in certain areas, such as expectations in profitability and sales, changes in revenue, funding and credit, and workforce changes. This article further explores the challenges facing these businesses during these unprecedented times.

Using a linked data file containing records from the Homicide and Integrated Criminal Court Survey, the article examines how incidents of homicide move from the policing stage through to their final outcomes in criminal court. From solve rates, to the type of charge heard in court, to verdicts and length of sentence, the article examines cases where the victim was an Indigenous woman or girl in comparison to non-Indigenous victims. Description: The Indigenous Peoples Survey (IPS) is a national survey on the social and economic conditions of First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit. The objectives of the IPS are to identify the needs of these Indigenous groups and to inform policy and programming activities aimed at improving the well-being of Indigenous peoples. The IPS aims to provide current and relevant data for a variety of stakeholders, including Indigenous organizations, communities, service providers, researchers, governments and the general public.

The 2017 APS represents the fifth cycle of the survey and focuses on participation in the Canadian economy, transferable skills, practical training, use of information technology and Indigenous language attainment of First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit aged 15 years and over.

The 2022 IPS represents the sixth cycle of the survey and focuses on families and children including child care, access to services, family stability, intergenerational trauma and discrimination, sense of belonging, and Indigenous languages and culture, of First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit aged 1 year and over.

Many of the 60 or so Aboriginal languages in Canada are considered endangered to varying degrees for their long-term survival. Assessing language vitality or endangerment through the measurement of various factors can provide useful information to help ensure the continuity of a language. This paper illustrates how the 2011 Census of Population and the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS) can be used to measure some of the factors that provide information related to the vitality of Aboriginal languages.

The Aboriginal Peoples Survey is a national survey of Aboriginal peoples (First Nations people living off-reserve, Métis and Inuit) living in urban, rural and northern locations throughout Canada. The survey provides valuable data on the social and economic conditions of Aboriginal children and youth (6-14 years) and Aboriginal people (15 years and over). It was conducted previously in 1991 and in 2001. The survey was designed and implemented in partnership with national Aboriginal organizations. The purpose of the Aboriginal Peoples Survey was to provide data on the social and economic conditions of Aboriginal people in Canada. More specifically, its purpose was to identify the needs of Aboriginal people and focus on issues such as health, language, employment, income, schooling, housing, and mobility.
