The Registered IndianNote 1 population was estimated at 910,000 in 2016. Depending on the projection scenario, it could reach between 1.1 million and 1.4 million in 2041.Note 2 The average annual growth rate would vary between 0.8% and 1.8% between 2016 and 2041.

The median age of the Registered Indian population is projected to be between 37.9 and 38.6 years in 2041, up from 28.1 years in 2016. In comparison, the median age of the non-Indigenous population is projected to increase from 41.4 to 44.7 years over the same period.Note 2

Proportion of Registered Indians living on reserve

In 2016, 42.4% of Registered Indians lived on reserve. This proportion is projected to decrease to between 34.0% and 39.2% in 2041.

By 2041, the Registered Indian population would increase in all Canadian provinces and regions.
