As the ninth goal outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Canada and other UN member states have committed to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation by 2030. This 2022 infographic provides an overview of indicators underlying the ninth Sustainable Development Goal in support of industry, innovation and infrastructure, and the statistics and data sources used to monitor and report on this goal in Canada.

Monitoring traffic in large urban areas remains a challenge for both practical and technical reasons. This paper presents a computer vision-based system to periodically extract vehicle counts from Canadian traffic camera imagery.

This paper documents the use of the Worldwide Patent Statistical Database (PATSTAT), a global patent application database created by the European Patent Office, to create the Canadian Research Patent Database at Statistics Canada. Innovation is an important driver of the economy, and patent statistics are recognized as a useful measure of innovative activity. The current version of the Canadian Research Patent Database focuses on the worldwide patent applications of businesses with an address in Canada (Canada-resident businesses).

This article presents some initial findings from a new longitudinal database created from administrative data sources to study patenting in Canada. The study of patenting is important as patenting is a measure of innovative activity and has been linked to positive economic outcomes for firms.

This study examines the economic footprint created by the Canadian research and development pharmaceutical sector on the Canadian economy in 2019, including a focus on the contribution of Innovative Medicines Canada’s members. While the impact of the sector’s medical research is well known, less known are the economic impacts of the sector on the Canadian economy, such as the value generated, the jobs supported and the investments made.

Micro-level information on buildings and physical infrastructure is increasing in relevance to social, economic and environmental statistical programs. Alternative data sources and advanced analytical methods can be used to generate some of this information. This paper presents how multiple convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are finetuned to classify buildings into different types (e.g., house, apartment, industrial) using their street-view images. The CNNs use the structure of the façade in the building’s image for classification. Multiple state-of-the-art CNNs are finetuned to accomplish the classification task. The trained models provide a proof of concept and show that CNNs can be used to classify buildings using their street-view imagery. The training and validation performance of the trained CNNs are measured. Furthermore, the trained CNNs are evaluated on a separate test set of street-view imagery. This approach can be used to augment the information available on openly accessible databases, such as the Open Database of Buildings.

The entrepreneurship indicator database provides data describing the dynamics of a subset of Canadian enterprises, such as the number of active enterprises with one or more employees, the number of high-growth enterprises, the number of births and deaths of active enterprises with one or more employees, the survival of newly created enterprises, and more.

The federal government offers business innovation and growth support through program streams managed by its departments and agencies. In 2017, enterprises in the manufacturing sector accounted for almost one-quarter of the beneficiaries of this support and received almost one-third of the total value of support (Statistics Canada, 2020). The objective of this analysis is to assess the impact of federal growth and innovation support on the employment and revenue of beneficiary enterprises in the manufacturing sector between 2007 and 2017. This analysis suggests that enterprises that received federal support for growth and innovation experienced stronger employment and revenue growth relative to non-beneficiary enterprises. Over the three years following receipt of support, employment growth for beneficiary enterprises averaged 1.8% per year while, on average, enterprises that did not receive support experienced employment declines. Over the same period, the average annual revenue growth of beneficiary enterprises was higher than that of non-beneficiary enterprises by 4.6 percentage points.

Over the past two decades, Canadians have embraced digital technologies at an unprecedented pace and breadth. The objective of this study is to develop statistical indexes to measure the intensity of digitalization in Canadian industries. Because of the ubiquitous presence of digitalization and businesses’ and individuals’ increasing reliance on digital products and services, it is essential to measure the digitalization in the Canadian economy to better understand its impact so that governments, businesses and other stakeholders can make informed decisions.

The higher education sector is composed of all universities, colleges of technology and other institutes of postsecondary education, whatever their source of finance or legal status. It also includes all research institutes, experimental stations and clinics operating under the direct control of, or administered by, or associated with higher education establishments.

The universe for the RDCI consists of all firms known or believed to be involved in the performance or funding of R&D. The frame for this survey has a long history spanning back to the conception of the survey more than 50 years ago. Firms are identified through many sources but most frequently firms are added from the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) T661 files.

Canada's economic competitiveness depends on scientific and technological development and also on the people responsible for this development, especially those engaged in R&D. In an earlier Science statistics bulletin, we published the gross domestic expenditures on R&D in Canada (GERD). This issue presents a supplementary measure to the GERD, the number of personnel who perform Canada's R&D activities.

This release contains estimates of total spending on research and development (R&D) in the health field in Canada. Tables demonstrate expenditures on health R&D by both performer and funder from 2004 to 2008 preliminary estimates.

Data on science and technology (S&T) expenditures and full-time equivalent personnel allocated to biotechnology for fiscal year 2007/2008 were collected from selected federal government departments and agencies. The biotechnology S&T data comprise expenditures on research and development (R&D) and related scientific activities (RSA) for both intramural and extramural performers and the full-time equivalent personnel associated with these activities.

The analysis presented in this report is a joint project of the Chemicals and Bio-Industries Branch of Industry Canada and the Science and Technology Redesign Project of Statistics Canada.

This study examines the differences in strategies and activities pursued by a sample of more-successful and less-successful group of growing small- and medium-sized enterprises. Amongst other matters, it examines different functional strategies -- the importance of management, human resource practices, marketing, financing, and the innovativeness of the firm. Innovative activities are the most important determinants of success; that is, for a wide range of industries, they serve to discriminate between the more- and the less-successful firms better than any other variable. Almost all of the strategy questions that relate to innovative activity receive higher scores from the more-successful group of firms than from the less-successful group of firms. This is also the case for innovative activities -- whether a firm possesses an R&D unit, its expenditure on R&D relative to total investment, and its R&D-to-sales ratio.

Many analysts see high technology industries as the way to a healthy and wealthy economy. This article reviews some of the concepts and definitions of high technology, selects one definition and examines the 1977 to 1986 employment and earnings dynamics in these industries.

This on-line report summarizes research and development (R&D) activities performed and funded by Canadian business enterprises and industrial research institutes and associations. The data are used, for instance, to plan and evaluate R&D tax incentive programs, to provide indicators of the state of industrial innovation and to complement national aggregates for scientific R&D expenditures and personnel. Among the topics covered are current and capital expenditures on research and development, energy R&D expenditures by area of technology, R&D expenditures as a percentage of company revenues, sources of funds for intramural R&D, personnel engaged in R&D, and foreign payments made and received for technological services. Most historical tables are presented for the latest five years and disaggregated by 46 industrial groupings, size of R&D program, employment size, revenue size, country of control, and by province.

It covers expenditures and person-years by type of science, performing sectors, provinces and federal departments and agencies. This series, which consists of about six issues per year, presents a variety of science and technology statistics. Each issue concerns a different topic, for example: research and development expenditures and personnel in business enterprises, science and technology expenditures and personnel in the federal government or provincial governments; and estimates of higher education expenditures on research and development.

Statistics Canada is engaged in the "Information System for Science and Technology Project" to develop useful indicators of activity and a framework to tie them together into a coherent picture of science and technology (S&T) in Canada. The working papers series is used to publish results of the different initiatives conducted within this project. The data are related to the activities, linkages and outcomes of S&T. Several key areas are covered such as: innovation, technology diffusion, human resources in S&T and interrelations between different actors involved in S&T. This series also presents data tabulations taken from regular surveys on research and development (R&D) and S&T and made possible by the project.

This annual publication is based on the Survey of Intellectual Property Commercialization in the Higher Education Sector which tracks the progress of innovation in this area.

The objective of the survey is to assure the availability of pertinent information to monitor science and technology related activities and to support the development of science and technology policy. The topic studied is intellectual property management at universities and affiliated teaching hospitals. The data are used to determine how to maximize the benefits resulting from public sector research. Data users include the federal and provincial governments and university administrators and researchers.

The bulletin summarizes and highlights new results in the analysis of science, technology and the information society. The articles cover current issues in science and technology activities, advanced technologies, innovation in industry and electronic media. The bulletin is designed to be easily readable by non-experts.

Statistics Canada is engaged in an Information System for Science and Technology Project which purpose is to develop useful indicators of activity and a framework to tie them together into a coherent picture of science and technology in Canada. This series publishes analytical work relating to science and technology issues. These documents relate to specific questions or complex analyses derived from survey results conducted at Statistics Canada. More speculative studies related to science and technology issues are also published.
