This is the third in a series of articles that examines the impact of COVID-19 on aviation in Canada and looks for signs of recovery up to the end of 2021. This third article puts Canada into an international context with a focus on airlines. Using data from statistical agencies and aviation regulators of the countries examined, as well as the International Air Transport Association, this article compares the recovery in passenger numbers in the six largest countries in the world by area. It also looks at some of the factors that had an impact on the recovery.

After a brief overview of data and methods, the article examines a breadth of flying activities and finds that those such as general aviation, flight training, aerial work and smaller air carriers were able to recover faster than the larger airlines.

Description: The Canadian Consumer Price Index (CPI) accounts for the sale of used vehicles by including a net expenditure weight for used vehicles in the index for the purchase of passenger vehicles. However, price changes for new cars were used as a proxy for used cars to ensure price change for this product was still covered to the best extent possible. The research paper outlines the proposed plan for introducing used vehicle prices, including data and methods. With the introduction of the 2021 CPI basket, a new approach for measuring price change in used vehicles is recommended to replace the previous method of measuring used vehicles price change by proxy.

This project is an evidence-based measurement of mobility for key corridors in our urban centers across Canada. Transport Canada computes a mobility indicator to assess the impact of urban bottlenecks in Canada’s strategic trade corridors and the economy. This information is important for practitioners and policymakers as it goes beyond anecdotal evidence on a subject affecting millions of Canadians and our trade corridors. The mobility indicator in question is the Travel Time Index (TTI). It is the ratio of the measured travel time to the free-flow travel time. Free-flow travel time is measured overnight, when drivers are free to drive at their desired speed because of low volume traffic conditions.
