Description: This article, which is based on data from the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Survey and the Homicide Survey, presents key trends in crime rates and the Crime Severity Index (CSI) for police-reported crime in rural areas of the Canadian provinces. This is an update of the Juristat article entitled “Police-reported crime in rural and urban areas in the Canadian provinces, 2021”.

Description: In collaboration with the Bank of Canada, this research paper extends previous work on alternative approaches to measuring owned accommodation (OA) in the Canadian Consumer Price Index (CPI), with a particular focus on rental equivalence (RE). The analysis constructs analytical price index series for Canada using the main OA measurement concepts proposed in the International Consumer Price Index Manual and widely adopted internationally. The study examines how OA and the all-items CPI may have evolved from 2004 to 2025 under different methodologies. The inclusion of asking-rent–based RE measures aims to better capture secondary rental market dynamics and provide more timely insights into how rent movements affect OA and the all-items CPI.

Description: Using data from the Survey of Safety in Public and Private Spaces (SSPPS), this Juristat article examines perceptions of people in Canada, as they relate to issues of gender, gender equality, gender expression, gender identity, and gender-based violence. The article examines these perceptions with a particular focus on shifts since 2018. Characteristics associated with differences in perceptions will also be explored (including but not limited to gender, age, sexual orientation, geographic location, Indigenous identity, racialized groups, and experiences of gender-based violence).

Description: Previous research has found variability in cancer incidence and cancer-related outcomes according to place of residence. This study examined geographic variability in the incidence and mortality of breast cancer among females in Canada, using data from the 2021 Canadian Cancer Registry (breast cancer incidence) and the Canadian Vital Statistics – Death database (breast cancer mortality). Age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) and age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) per 100,000 females per year and their rate ratios were calculated, as well as age group-specific and age-standardized stage-specific incidence rates, and examined across provinces and territories, community sizes, and peer groups (i.e., clusters of health regions with similar socioeconomic and demographic characteristics).

Description: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Canada. Breast density substantially influences breast cancer risk and mammography performance. However, OncoSim-Breast, a Canadian microsimulation model representing breast cancer control, including cancer onset, screening, and survival, has not previously explicitly accounted for breast density. This study describes the incorporation of density-specific parameters—prevalence, relative risk of breast cancer, and digital mammography performance (sensitivity and specificity)—using data from five Canadian provinces, into the OncoSim-Breast model. Calibration experiments and internal validations were conducted to ensure the updated OncoSim-Breast model aligned with observed data from the Canadian Cancer Registry.

CIP was originally created by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) in the United States. It is a hierarchical classification. The classification provides a detailed description of each instructional program class together with illustrative examples of the types of instructional programs found in that class. Illustrative examples are also provided of closely related programs that are classified elsewhere. In addition, the classification includes an introduction to CIP and an alternative structure for the aggregation of field of study data. CIP has a ten-year revision cycle.
