Description: This analytical report presents selected findings from the 2022 Indigenous Peoples Survey (formerly called the Aboriginal Peoples Survey). The 2022 IPS represents the sixth cycle of the survey and focuses on Indigenous children and their families. This report covers First Nations children living off reserve, Métis children and Inuit children aged 1 to 14, and includes topics such as sociodemographic characteristics, food security and basic needs, Indigenous languages and culture, child care and a number of health indicators. Disaggregated data by gender, age groups, and geography (provinces and territories, inside and ouside Inuit Nunangat, urban and rural) are presented when possible. The report also includes comparisons to the 2006 Aboriginal Children's Survey, the 2006 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, and the 2019 Canadian Health Survey of Children and Youth.

Description: This report explores the statistical and analytical potential of information on the language-related characteristics of occupations provided by the Occupational and Skills Information System (OaSIS). OaSIS is an information system developed by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) which provides detailed information on occupations. The report identifies and explores a series of descriptors of occupations related to skills, work activities and work contexts that have a language- or communication-related aspect. These descriptors of occupations are used to enrich data from the 2021 Census.

In order to help users of census products to better understand the various Census of Population concepts, Statistics Canada has developed, in the context of the activities of the 2021 Census and previous censuses, a collection of short videos. Description: This discussion paper begins by explaining what is commonly understood as child care and how child care expenses currently enter the market basket measure (MBM) methodology. It then describes an alternative approach to account for child care expenses by incorporating them as a separate component within the MBM based on the reference family. Description: This fact sheet uses 2016 Census of Population data linked to the Remoteness Index to examine the relationship between remoteness and high school completion for First Nations people, Métis, and Inuit aged 19 to 45. The Remoteness index measures geographic proximity to service centers for each populated community, which is an important determinant of socio-economic, education, and health outcomes. This study attempts to disentangle factors relevant to educational attainment and shed light on the learning context of First Nations people, Métis, and Inuit.

Description: This fact sheet uses 2016 data to examine the education outcomes of First Nations youth aged 19 to 30 in secondary and postsecondary learning, alongside characteristics that may affect their educational experience. This study is guided by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action, which recognize the importance of equitable education in the success of Indigenous peoples. Comparisons between First Nations and non-Indigenous youth are presented in response to the TRC’s 55th Call to Action.

This report highlights the results of the geography portion of the 2001 Census consultation process. At the June 1998 federal-provincial conference session on the 2001 Census, geography was described as the "cornerstone" of the census. Based on the submissions received in the past year, many users feel the same way. It is the standard geographic areas that determine the framework in which the data will be released. It is the users, through the consultation process, who influence the changes to the standard geographic areas that are recommended for each census.

Description:

The Geography Divisions of Statistics Canada and the U.S. Bureau of the Census have commenced a cooperative research program in order to foster an improved and expanded perspective on geographic areas and their relevance. One of the major objectives is to determine a common geographic area to form a geostatistical basis for cross-border research, analysis and mapping.

This report, which represents the first stage of the research, provides a list of comparable pairs of Canadian and U.S. standard geographic areas based on current definitions. Statistics Canada and the U.S. Bureau of the Census have two basic types of standard geographic entities: legislative/administrative areas (called "legal" entities in the U.S.) and statistical areas.

The preliminary pairing of geographic areas are based on face-value definitions only. The definitions are based on the June 4, 1991 Census of Population and Housing for Canada and the April 1, 1990 Census of Population and Housing for the U.S.A. The important aspect is the overall conceptual comparability, not the precise numerical thresholds used for delineating the areas.

Data users should use this report as a general guide to compare the census geographic areas of Canada and the United States, and should be aware that differences in settlement patterns and population levels preclude a precise one-to-one relationship between conceptually similar areas. The geographic areas compared in this report provide a framework for further empirical research and analysis.
