Study: Measuring the language-related characteristics of occupations using the Occupational and Skills Information System

Today, Statistics Canada is releasing the report "Measuring the language-related characteristics of occupations using the Occupational and Skills Information System."

This report explores the statistical and analytical potential of information on the language-related characteristics of occupations provided by the Occupational and Skills Information System (OaSIS), developed by Employment and Social Development Canada. This information makes it possible to contextualize the use of language in different occupations according to the skills required, communication activities performed and work contexts. For example, the occupational characteristics examined include the level of communication with co-workers, the level of work directly with the public, the frequency of written communications or the level of literacy skills required.

In this report, occupational information from OaSIS is used to shed new light on 2021 Census of Population data, particularly on the use of languages at work in certain places where multilingualism at work is common, like in the Montréal and Ottawa–Gatineau regions, as well as New Brunswick.
