These disparities may reflect underlying differences in access to health care. This study used pooled data from the annual Canadian Community Health Survey from 2015 to 2019 to assess whether inequalities in access to primary and pharmaceutical health care exist between Black and White adults in Canada and sought to identify how specific factors contribute to observed inequalities.

Cycle 11 collected data from persons 15 years and older and concentrated on help given or received during temporary difficult times or out of necessity due to long-term health or physical limitations in daily activities either inside or outside the household. The target population of the General Social Survey consisted of all individuals aged 15 and over living in a private household in one of the ten provinces.

The National Population Health Survey (NPHS) is designed to enhance the understanding of the processes affecting health. The survey collects cross-sectional as well as longitudinal data. In 1994/95 the survey interviewed a panel of 17,276 individuals, then returned to interview them a second time in 1996/97. The response rate for these individuals was 96% in 1996/97. Data collection from the panel will continue for up to two decades. For cross-sectional purposes, data were collected for a total of 81,000 household residents in all provinces (except people on Indian reserves or on Canadian Forces bases) in 1996/97.

This overview illustrates the variety of information available by presenting data on perceived health, chronic conditions, injuries, repetitive strains, depression, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, consultations with medical professionals, use of medications and use of alternative medicine.

The special ten year anniversary edition of Canadian cancer statistics 1997 represents a collaborative effort between Statistics Canada, the National Cancer Institute of Canada, Health Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society, and provincial/territorial cancer registries. This 71 page monograph contains estimates of cancer incidence and mortality for 1997, historical (actual and estimated) data from 1969 to 1997, and selected indicators on the burden of cancer. Estimates were produced by modelling actual cancer incidence and mortality data by province for selected cancer sites. The special topic this year is a comparison of the burden of cancer in Canada in 1997 to that reported in the first edition in 1987.

The National Population Health Survey (NPHS) uses the Labour Force Survey sampling frame to draw a sample of approximately 22,000 households. The sample is distributed over four quarterly collection periods. In each household, some limited information is collected from all household members and one person, aged 12 years and over, in each household is randomly selected for a more in-depth interview.

The questionnaire includes content related to health status, use of health services, determinants of health and a range of demographic and economic information. For example, the health status information includes self-perception of health, a health status index, chronic conditions, and activity restrictions. The use of health services is probed through visits to health care providers, both traditional and non-traditional, and the use of drugs and other medications. Health determinants include smoking, alcohol use, physical activity and in the first survey, emphasis has been placed on the collection of selected psycho-social factors that may influence health, such as stress, self-esteem and social support. The demographic and economic information includes age, sex, education, ethnicity, household income and labour force status.

The survey, begun in February 1994, monitors the smoking patterns of Canadians over a 12 month period and to measure any changes in smoking resulting from the decrease in taxes in cigarettes which took place in February 1994 in some provinces. Description: The Canadian Active Living Environments (Can-ALE) project was developed in 2019 to provide a standardized, pan-Canadian indicator of how supportive neighbourhood built environments are for physical activity and active transportation, enabling comparisons across places and over time. Can-ALE 1.0 produced measures for the 2006 and 2016 census years, but it did not include 2011 or 2021. As well, the data and processing steps were not packaged in a fully reproducible format, limiting longitudinal analyses and replication. In this study, the original measure was replicated and extended by developing Can-ALE 2.0, an open-source, reproducible R-based workflow to generate Can-ALE metrics for the 2011, 2016, and 2021 census years.

Description: The COVID-19 pandemic expanded virtual care through telephone, video, and digital communication, with usage patterns varying by patients’ sociodemographic and health characteristics. Continued virtual care use after the pandemic highlights the need for updated information on modality choice and patient satisfaction. This study used data from the 2023 Canadian Social Survey – Quality of Life, Virtual Health Care and Trust, to estimate the distribution of virtual care modes by provider type, positive and negative aspects of patients’ last virtual appointment, and satisfaction levels.

Description: Previous research has found variability in cancer incidence and cancer-related outcomes according to place of residence. This study examined geographic variability in the incidence and mortality of breast cancer among females in Canada, using data from the 2021 Canadian Cancer Registry (breast cancer incidence) and the Canadian Vital Statistics – Death database (breast cancer mortality). Age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) and age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) per 100,000 females per year and their rate ratios were calculated, as well as age group-specific and age-standardized stage-specific incidence rates, and examined across provinces and territories, community sizes, and peer groups (i.e., clusters of health regions with similar socioeconomic and demographic characteristics).

Description: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Canada. Breast density substantially influences breast cancer risk and mammography performance. However, OncoSim-Breast, a Canadian microsimulation model representing breast cancer control, including cancer onset, screening, and survival, has not previously explicitly accounted for breast density. This study describes the incorporation of density-specific parameters—prevalence, relative risk of breast cancer, and digital mammography performance (sensitivity and specificity)—using data from five Canadian provinces, into the OncoSim-Breast model. Calibration experiments and internal validations were conducted to ensure the updated OncoSim-Breast model aligned with observed data from the Canadian Cancer Registry.

Description: The Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHECs) are a series of population-based microdata linkages. The CanCHECs combine census respondents to the long-form questionnaire with administrative health data and annual postal codes for mailing addresses. These data can be used to examine health outcomes by population characteristics measured by the census long-form sample data. This user guide has been created to help potential data users, including researchers and academics, public health officials, government agencies, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations.

Description: The Canadian Index of Social Resilience (CISR) and the Canadian Index of Social Vulnerability (CISV) were created to provide area-based information on resilience and vulnerability to natural hazards and disasters across Canada. The user guide explains how the CISR and CISV were developed and how to use them. The indexes can be used to better understand areas which may experience the largest disproportional social impacts from natural hazards.
