Description:

Custom tabulations from the National Household Survey are available for 2011. They are produced to meet the needs of individual users, according to their exact requirements in terms of content, geography, format and output medium. This includes the derivation of new variables and the creation of custom geographies. The flexibility of this tabulation type allows for the handling of many demanding and complex requests. Experienced custom services consultants are available to advise clients on the tabulation that will best suit their needs.

Description:

Semi-custom tabulations from the National Household Survey are available for 2011. Semi-custom tabulations allow users to replicate the data content of standard data tables for custom geographies or a fixed profile for custom geographies or custom target groups. The fixed profile, which cannot be modified, contains a wide range of characteristics from the National Household Survey in a compact and easy to use format. Semi-custom tabulations contain three types of tables, semi-custom profiles, target group profiles and semi-custom cross-tabulations.

1. Semi-custom Profiles

Semi-custom profiles replicate a fixed profile for custom geographies. This format allows for easy comparison of characteristics between geographies. The semi-custom profile content pertains to individuals, families, households, and dwellings. Additional costs apply for creation of custom geographies.

2. Target Group Profiles

Target group profiles replicate a fixed profile for a custom target group (such as a specific linguistic group). This format allows for easier analysis of the characteristics of a target group on its own. In addition to the target group, the desired geography can also be customized. The content pertains to the universe of individuals only (no family, household, or dwelling data are available). Additional costs apply for creation of the target group and for creation of any custom geographies.

3. Semi-custom Cross-tabulations

Semi-custom cross-tabulations enable users to replicate the content of published Data Tables for the geographic area(s) and output medium of their choice.

Some Data Tables provide a simple overview of the country, others consist of three or four cross-tabulated variables, and still others are of special or analytic interest.

Description:

The semi-custom profile subscription service enables users to receive semi-custom profile components as data are released. This service is available via the Statistics Canada's regional offices in a number of available media.

Semi-custom profiles allow users to replicate the data content of the standard profile for custom geographies or a fixed profile for custom geographies or custom target groups. The fixed profile, which cannot be modified, contains a wide range of National Household Survey characteristics in a compact and easy-to-use format. Description:

In 2009, the Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) commissioned the Nunavut Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and Statistics Canada (STC) to undertake a Nunavut-wide Housing Needs Survey. A partnership was established between Statistics Canada and the Nunavut Bureau of Statistics whereby the NBS would collect the data under the Nunavut Statistics Act and manage data collection activities, including the hiring and training of survey interviewers and collection monitoring, from a northern base. Statistics Canada's role was to provide technical assistance to the NBS throughout the survey development and collection process and to process and analyze the survey results.

The objectives of the Nunavut Housing Needs Survey are to: collect accurate data on the housing needs of Nunavummiut, quantify and identify the factors related to the housing shortage in Nunavut, provide communities with information on housing conditions within their communities, and assist the Government of Nunavut in planning and providing for the housing needs of Nunavummiut.

The survey was conducted in person, using a paper questionnaire. One adult person in each dwelling responded to the survey on behalf of all household members.

Description: This interactive data visualization tool uses graphs to present social inclusion indicators under the theme Representation in decision-making positions. The indicators (workers in all management occupations, workers in senior management occupation and workers in  specialized middle management occupations) can be disaggregated by visible minority and selected sociodemographic characteristics for the population in private households. Data are available for Canada, geographical regions of Canada, province or territory and census metropolitan area. This data visualization tool is part of a broader conceptual framework on social inclusion and covers a total of 11 themes. Each theme has a similar interactive visualization tool.

The indicators (household food security and insecurity [5], population living in a dwelling owned by one member of the household; population in core housing need; population living in suitable housing; and in affordable housing) can be disaggregated by visible minority and selected sociodemographic characteristics. Data are available for Canada, geographical regions of Canada, province or territory and census metropolitan area. This data visualization tool is part of a broader conceptual framework on social inclusion and covers a total of 11 themes. Each theme has a similar interactive visualization tool.

This data visualization tool is part of a broader conceptual framework on social inclusion and covers a total of 11 themes. Each theme has a similar interactive visualization tool.

The indicators (highest certificate, diploma or degree [6] and knowledge of official languages [4]) can be disaggregated by visible minority and selected sociodemographic characteristics for the population in private households. Data are available for Canada, geographical regions of Canada, province or territory and census metropolitan area. This data visualization tool is part of a broader conceptual framework on social inclusion and covers a total of 11 themes. Each theme has a similar interactive visualization tool.

Description: The Individuals File, 2011 National Household Survey (Public Use Microdata Files) provides data on the characteristics of the Canadian population. The file contains a 2.7% sample of anonymous responses to the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS) questionnaire. The files have been carefully scrutinized to ensure the complete confidentiality of the individual responses and geographic identifiers have been restricted to provinces/territories and metropolitan areas. With 133 variables, this comprehensive tool is excellent for policy analysts, pollsters, social researchers and anyone interested in modelling and performing statistical regression analysis using National Household Survey data.

Microdata files uniquely provide users access to non-aggregated data. The PUMFs user can group and manipulate these variables to suit data and research requirements. Tabulations excluded from other NHS products can be created or relationships between variables can be analyzed using different statistical tests. PUMFs provide quick access to a comprehensive social and economic database about Canada and its people.

This product, offered on DVD-ROM, contains the data file (in ASCII format); user documentation and supporting information; all licence agreements; and SAS, SPSS and Stata program source codes to enable users to read the set of records. It is important to note that users will require knowledge of data manipulation packages (or software) such as SAS, SPSS or Stata to use this product.

Description: This hierarchical PUMF product provides access to non-aggregated data covering a sample of 1% of the Canadian households. It is a comprehensive social, demographic and economic database about Canada and its people, and contains a wealth of characteristics on the population. The file enables the study of individuals in relation to their census families, economic families and households. The geographic identifiers have been restricted to the provinces, the three territories grouped into a region called Northern Canada and selected metropolitan areas (Toronto, Montréal, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary) to ensure respondents’ anonymity. This comprehensive tool is excellent for policy analysts, pollsters, social researchers and anyone interested in modeling and performing statistical regression analysis using 2011 National Household Survey data.

The Individuals File was released on July 29, 2014 and the Hierarchical File is available as of today, December 9, 2014.

This product, available in DVD-ROM format, contains a data file in American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) format as well as user documentation. It contains SAS, SPSS and Stata program source codes to enable users to read the set of records. The low-income rate is one of the most observed indicators of well-being, used to track changes in living standards and to identify groups at risk of social exclusion. Statistics Canada does not currently publish low-income rates for the on-reserve and Territorial populations, although other organizations have developed and published their own low-income statistics using Census or National Household Survey (NHS) data. This publication examines the concepts and methodologies underlying low-income indicators with the aim of providing guidance to users who wish to examine low income on reserve or in the Territories using Census or NHS data.
