Description: This study uses data from multiple waves of the Canadian Social Survey (CSS) to examine trends in three key Quality of Life indicators, namely life satisfaction, experiences of financial hardship, and future outlook. Monitoring these well-being indicators following periods of considerable social and economic change is particularly important. Beginning in the summer of 2021, the CSS, a new quarterly survey, captured the latter part of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the rising cost of living in Canada, allowing for an understanding of how Canadians are coping with these challenges.

Description: The industrial capacity utilization rate is the ratio of actual output to potential output. Data are published quarterly and cover all goods-producing industries, with the exception of the agriculture industry. The visualization model shows rates, quarterly changes, and year-over-year changes for manufacturing industries.

Description: The need for alternative data sources is of growing importance for both supplementing Statistics Canada's data holdings and for nowcasting economic activity. In response to this need, Statistics Canada initiated the development of a Real-time Local Business Conditions Index (RT-LBCI). The index brings together data from a few different sources, including Google's Places API (containing data on temporary and permanent businesses closures), TomTom Real-time traffic API (road traffic data), as well as information from Statistics Canada data holdings (monthly retail and wholesale, Business Register, etc.). The project aims to compute a near real-time index of economic activity in Canadian major cities.

In 1995, 200 marine carriers based in Canada, including for-hire marine carriers, private carriers and government carriers, owned and operated a fleet of 1,760 vessels and employed 21,940 people with wages and salaries of $1,083 billion.

The results of the biennial Canadian Travel Survey, from which the data for the first quarter of 1996 were disseminated recently, indicate that Canadians travelled less within their country during the first three months of 1996 than during the same period in 1994. Canadian took over 31 million trips in total, 9.4% from the first quarter 1994 (Table 1). The decreases were greatest in February and March 1996, when Canadians reduced their travel by 12.6% and 11.9% respectively.

Reapeating the success of the previous year, Canadians ports once again broke the tonnage record for international cargo handled in 1996. International cargo totaled 260.3 million tonnes, a slight increase of 2.2.% compared to the peak established in 1995. In 1996, the bulk of the growth in Canadian marine activity can be attributed to international unloading of goods.

The railway industry in Canada is highly dependent on factors affecting the production of and demand for bulk commodities. Five commodities -- coal, iron ore, wheat, potash and containers-on-flat-cars represent about half of the total tonnage transported domestically to export oriented destinations.

Private carriers are businesses that maintain a fleet of trucks to carry their own goods. The motor carriers of freight, private carriers survey covers those private carriers with at least $1 million in annual operating expenses that can provide separate accounting information for their trucking activities within the larger busines. This survey collects data on the size, structure and financial performance of those reporting private carriers. The number of carriers reporting to the survey in 1995 was 442, an increase of 22% over 1994. This increase was due, not to new firms entering the industry, but to an effort to contact as many carriers as possible using a recently updated list. In the following text, 1995 data comparisons with previous years are performed on a per carrier basis.

After the double-digit growth experienced in 1993 and 1994, trucking activity by Canada-based for-hire carriers with annual intercity revenues of at least $1.0 million increased at a more moderate rate in 1995 and 1996.

Sixty-seven Top Canada-based for-hire motor carriers (those with annual revenues over $25 million) posted operating ratios of 0.95 and 0.96 respectively in the third and fourth quarter of 1996. These ratios are identical to those for the same period in 1995. By type of trucking activity, there were some changes for the Specialized Freight carriers where the operating ratio, compared to the same period last year, has deteriorated in the 3rd quarter (from 0.93 to 0.94) and improved in the 4th quarter (from 0.97 to 0.96) There was no change in the operating ratios for the General Freight carriers from a year earlier.

The federal government's Canadian Environmental Industry Strategy consists of a number of initiatives to achieve a cleaner environment and a stronger environmental industry. Statistics Canada received funding from Industry Canada, under Initiative 8 of the strategy, to develop a national statistical database on the environment industry. Statistics Canada began a program consisting of new surveys, modifications to existing surveys and integration of statistics from various components of its economic statistics framework.

The environment "industry" does not exist as an explicit element in any existing classification. This is not surprising, because the environment industry consists of business involved in activities that span a number of different industries in the Standard Industrial Classification. Attempts had been made to identify environmental goods and services in existing classifications, but without appreciable success. It was necessary to develop new ways and new tools to obtain the information. These methods are outlined.

A major objective of the approach adopted by Statistics Canada is to provide sufficient detail to permit comparability of the results with other countries and to satisfy a variety of data needs.

The user guide with appended data dictionary describes background information of COVID-19 as well as objectives, coverage, content, limitations and data quality concerns of the table.

Description: The primary source of data used in post index construction are periodic retail-price and cost-of-living surveys conducted at foreign locations by the foreign service personnel stationed there. Statistics Canada analyses this survey data. In addition to a variety of price information gathered from retail outlets patronized by Canadian personnel at the post, data are also obtained regarding their spending patterns, along with information on the availability of any special local purchasing facilities, and the extent to which staff make direct importation of consumer goods from other countries. The general aim is for full-scale surveys to be carried out at about three-year intervals. However, specific studies may be undertaken more or less frequently than this, depending on the volatility of retail price conditions in each particular country, the instability of exchange rates and the extent to which close monitoring of changes in the local retail price situation being faced by Canadian personnel can be achieved through reference to other statistical indicators.

Description: This technical reference guide is intended for users of the Education and Labour Market Longitudinal Platform (ELMLP). The data for the products associated with this issue are based on the longitudinal Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) administrative data files. Statistics Canada has derived a series of annual indicators of public postsecondary students including persistence rates, graduation rates, and average time to graduation by educational qualification, field of study, age group and gender for Canada, the provinces, and the three combined Territories.

Description: The Standard Classification of Countries and Areas of Interest (SCCAI) has been developed to increase coherence of the list of countries used within Statistics Canada and includes countries and areas for which statistical data are compiled. The Variant of the SCCAI for Social Statistics and the Variant of the SCCAI for Travel Statistics were developed to create groupings of countries to enable the production of integrated statistics when publishing social statistics data and travel statistics data, respectively. These variants have three levels.

Description: The Consolidated Energy Statistics table (CEST) provides national level monthly estimates of supply and demand characteristics, for both primary and secondary energy sources by fuel type. The data is presented in terajoules; a common unit of measure, allowing easy comparisons between different fuel and energy types. The table is updated with new data on a monthly basis.
