Census of Agriculture

This article presents the highlights and a brief analysis of the results from the 2021 Census of Agriculture for the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

This tool provides a statistical profile of farm and farm operator variables from the Census of Agriculture for a specific geographic location—or community—selected by users within the province/territory, census agriculture region (CAR), census division (CD) or census consolidated subdivision (CCS) levels of geography.

The number of goats for dairy on agricultural operations in Ontario is increasing as farmers expand and optimize production. When compared to other agricultural operations in the province, dairy goat operations can differ in terms of demographic, geographic, financial and organizational characteristics.

While Canadian livestock is often associated with more traditional sectors such as cattle, pigs, sheep and poultry, Canadian farms raise a host of other livestock and poultry. Other livestock include, for example, horses, donkeys, rabbits and deer. Other livestock and poultry can be found on a variety of operations, with varying demographic and financial characteristics.

This reference guide provides an overview of the Agricultural Ecumene Boundary File product (see the notes below), including the general methodology used to create the files and other important technical information.

The Agricultural Ecumene Boundary File delineates areas of significant agricultural activity in Canada. This product is generalized for small-scale mapping and can be used to clip or intersect with any geographic boundary file, administrative or natural, to limit the data display to those areas where agricultural activity is concentrated in Canada. When used in dot density and choropleth thematic maps, the ecumene concept provides a more accurate depiction of the spatial distribution of data within geographic areas.

This reference guide may be useful to both new and experienced users who wish to familiarize themselves with and find specific information about the Census of Agriculture.

This Cartographic Boundary File for Canada contains the boundaries of all 82 census agricultural regions delineated for the 2011 Census of Agriculture together with the shoreline around Canada and the larger inland lakes, all integrated in a single layer. The boundary file co-ordinates are latitude/longitude and are based on the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). The file is available in ARC/INFO Interchange, MapInfo Interchange and Geography Markup Language formats.

The Overview of the Census is a reference document covering each phase of the Census of Population and Census of Agriculture. It provides an overview of the 2011 Census from legislation governing the census to content determination, collection, processing, data quality assessment and data dissemination. It also traces the history of the census from the early days of New France to the present.

In addition, the Overview of the Census informs users about the steps taken to protect confidential information, along with steps taken to verify the data and minimize errors. It also provides information on the possible uses of census data and covers the different levels of geography and the range of products and services available.

The Overview of the Census may be useful to both new and experienced users who wish to familiarize themselves with and find specific information about the 2011 Census. The first part covers the Census of Population, while the second is about the Census of Agriculture.
