This article draws on the latest data from Statistics Canada's Registered Apprenticeship Information System (RAIS) to examine trends in apprenticeship training in Canada over the 1991 to 2007 period. Information is provided for trends in the total number of registrations and completions, by major trade group, and by sex and age. References to total registrations include the still-registered apprentices from the previous year plus newly-registered apprentices from the current year.

This article uses data from the National Apprenticeship Survey (NAS) 2007 to compare the profiles of apprentices who completed their programs between 2002 and 2004 and who had moved to Alberta by 2007 and those who stayed in their province of enrolment. It also compares a number of variables describing the working conditions of apprenticeship completers who migrated to Alberta for work and those who were working in the province where they received their training (other than Alberta).

Data on cohort size, median age at certification, tax filers, and the number of journeypersons who filed tax in the province of certification are also available.

Using data from Statistics Canada's Education and Labour Market Longitudinal Platform, this study examines populations designated as visible minorities in the skilled trades. The labour market outcomes one year after certification of journeypersons designated as visible minorities, who received certificates in the skilled trades between 2008 and 2017, were compared with the outcomes of journeypersons who are not visible minorities.

The COVID-19 pandemic had large impacts on those in the skilled trades, as these jobs often require hands-on and close-proximity interactions. Using data from the Education and Labour Market Longitudinal Platform, this study examines the pandemic's impacts by investigating the proportion of journeypersons who received the CERB among those who certified between 2008 and 2019. By examining the proportions across trades, geography and population groups, this study can provide further insight into how the pandemic affected those in the skilled trades and how the impacts were different across trades and groups.
