Census Trends presents a series of summary data trends spanning the 2006, 2001 and 1996 censuses. The product is designed to facilitate the analysis and comparison of the changing demographic and socio-economic composition of selected geographic areas across Canada. Summary data trends include percentage distributions and percentage change.

Census Trends will be released in two phases. The first set of summary data trends will be released on December 4, 2007, and the second, June 4, 2008. The product will include approximately 85 key data indicators.

Census Tract (CT) Profiles provide 2006 Census data for census tracts. Census tracts are small, relatively stable geographic areas that are located in census metropolitan areas (CMAs) and larger census agglomerations (CAs) and usually have a population of 2,500 to 8,000.

These profiles contain free information for all census tracts in Canada. Search capabilities such as by postal code and a mapping application assist the user in finding a census tract of interest. Additional information on data quality indexes and definitions is available.

Description: The 2002 Ethnic Diversity Survey (EDS) provides information on how people's backgrounds affect their participation in Canada's social, economic and cultural life of Canada. As well, it indicates how Canadians of different ethnic backgrounds interpret and report their ethnicity. Topics covered in the survey include ethnic ancestry, ethnic identity, place of birth, visible minority status, religion, religious participation, knowledge of languages, family background, family interaction, social networks, civic participation, interaction with society, attitudes, satisfaction with life, trust and socio-economic activities.

The EDS was a post-censal survey which included about 42,500 people aged 15 and over who were interviewed by telephone in the 10 provinces between April and August 2002. The target population did not include persons living in collective dwellings, persons living on reserves, persons declaring an Aboriginal origin or identity in the 2001 Census, or persons living in Northern and remote areas.

The accompanying documentation is intended to facilitate use of the 2002 EDS public use microdata file. It contains information on survey methodology, variables and estimation procedures as well as the rules governing the dissemination of estimates.

This report discusses various aspects of the quality of data on mother tongue, language spoken at home, knowledge of language and language at work. In the 2001 Census questionnaire, there are five questions on these four language categories. These questions, complemented by questions on ethnicity, religious affiliation and immigration, provide an opportunity to study linguistic and cultural characteristics of Canadians. These questions on languages are designed to collect the demolinguistic data. Demolinguistics, a subdiscipline of demography (not of linguistics), involves the demographic analysis of data on languages. Such analysis is useful for our understanding of, for instance, the linguistic diversity of Canadians, the evolution of language groups, or the transmission of mother tongue between generations. For each of the four categories of language questions mentioned above, the report describes briefly the procedures of data collection, some aspects of coverage, the processing stages of the data verification operation and the procedures used for editing and imputing the language variables. Finally, a description on how the data were evaluated will be presented.
