Description: The need for alternative data sources is of growing importance for both supplementing Statistics Canada's data holdings and for nowcasting economic activity. In response to this need, Statistics Canada initiated the development of a Real-time Local Business Conditions Index (RT-LBCI). The index brings together data from a few different sources, including Google's Places API (containing data on temporary and permanent businesses closures), TomTom Real-time traffic API (road traffic data), as well as information from Statistics Canada data holdings (monthly retail and wholesale, Business Register, etc.). The project aims to compute a near real-time index of economic activity in Canadian major cities.

This paper documents the approach used to construct the shelter element of the current spatial index program. The intercity indexes of the retail price differentials program of Prices Division had, until recently, excluded any reference to shelter because of conceptual issues. A rental equivalence approach is used for measuring spatial variations in the costs of shelter services among cities. To control for quality variations across areas, a semi-log separate hedonic regression methodology is used to construct the Laspeyres, Paasche, and Fisher Törnqvist interarea indices.

This article provides a practical example of the development of a survival analysis model. It begins with an overview of the software tool that was used, SAS. The next section examines the construction of a longitudinal file and the challenges that may present. Of particular interest are explanatory variables that do not have a constant value over time. An example of a practical application is provided to illustrate the survival approach. The example consists of an analysis based on data from the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID), specifically data from panel 1 between January 1993 and December 1998. Survey information in vector form is used to develop a Cox semi-parametric model. Comments are provided on a sample computer program. The way in which the program handles the main variables is also discussed. The last section contains a brief description of the results of a relatively simple model.

Large data sets present several challenges to researchers, particularly to less experienced researchers. One of the most time-consuming and frustrating activities for beginning researchers, who do not have experience with large datasets, can be pruning or parsing the data set to only the variables and sample of interest. The production of an 'efficient' data file can assist in the increased performance of hardware and software as well as reducing frustration for the researcher. One way of producing a parsed efficient data file using a program called Stat/Transfer is presented.

The report examines income and low income in census metropolitan areas between 1980 and 2000. It examines the situation of families and the neighbourhoods they live in. It also examines the situation of recent immigrants, Aboriginal people and lone-parent family members.

Median pre-tax income rose in virtually all Canadian census metropolitan areas (CMAs) over the 1980 to 2000 period. Incomes increased at both the top and bottom of the income distribution, but tended to rise faster at the top. In nearly all cities, income increased faster in the higher income neighbourhoods - measured at the census tract (CT) level - than it did in lower income neighbourhoods. The incidence of low income was at similar levels in 1980 and 2000, but the demographic composition of low income changed, reflecting rising low-income rates among some 'at-risk' groups, as well as demographic changes in the CMA. By 2000, recent immigrants comprised more of the low-income population, and a greater share of the residents in low-income neighbourhoods than they did in 1980. Recent immigrants had much higher low-income rates in 2000 than in 1980. In 2000, Aboriginal people and people in single-parent families had much higher low-income rates than others and were over-represented in low-income neighbourhoods. The share of income that low-income families received from government transfers rose over the period. The location of low-income neighbourhoods changed in some CMAs, reflecting a decline in low-income neighbourhoods in the city centre and a rise in low-income neighbourhoods in more suburban areas.

The report examines before-tax income in CMAs using the 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996 and 2001 censuses of Canada.

The collection of firms producing environmental goods and delivering environmental services constitutes the 'environment industry.' This industry has grown significantly in the past 20 years and stands to continue this development in the future as emerging issues such as the level of greenhouse gas emissions are addressed.

An important aspect in the evaluation of the industry's performance is in the area of job creation and employment generation. Related to the challenges involved in classifying firms to the environment industry is the issue of identifying the employees who work in environment-related activities. Currently, the published data on employment include only the total employment of those businesses producing environmental goods and services, i.e., employees who worked in the production/provision of goods and services that have both environmental and non-environmental applications.

Tracking water yield—an estimate of renewable water supply derived from National Water Data Archive (HYDAT) streamflow data—provides information to help understand water resources available for human use and ecosystem needs. Annual datasets are available for the years 1971 to 2021 and cover southern Canada. Thirty-year averages are available for 1971-2000, 1981-2010, and 1991-2020.
