How to use
Instructions to maximize the use of the MRC interactive dashboard
This interactive data visualization dashboard gives you access to the latest released data and the historical data related to rail freight transport in Canada with a focus on monthly statistics.
Key indicators are presented in interactive charts and tables—allowing you to compare and analyze the monthly railway carloadings estimates; and also look at trends measured as a percentage of the previous month’s value (M-o-M) as well as a percentage of change over the corresponding period a year earlier (Y-o-Y). You can also choose different periods you would like to display in the chart and the table by using the date slicer at the bottom of the page.
Data views are available from the start of the series in 1999. You can choose to display data in the line chart and in the table for specific components, units of measures and levels of geography by using the drop-down menus at the top of the main page. Month-over-month change and year-over-year change in percentages are displayed for the latest month of release, on the right corner of the main page for each component. Specific commodities can also be selected by clicking on the box “Commodities” on the main page. Once on this page, you can select the commodities you would like to display in the chart and in the table by using the commodity list on the right corner of the page.
The top 5 commodities for the month of release can also be viewed by clicking on the “Top 5 commodities gainers and decliners” box on the main page. The chart and the data table are based on the difference between the commodity freight value (tonnage) for the current month and year versus the same period in the previous year.
This web-based application is updated monthly, as soon as the data for the latest reference month is released in the Smart Daily.
