This table is part of the topic 'Canada's Work force: Paid Work,' which presents 2001 Census data on the paid work of the Canadian work force, including detailed industry and occupation data, class of worker and work activity during the reference year. Labour market information is available for small areas and small population groups.

These data are used by governments, businesses, labour unions and others to analyse labour market conditions throughout the country. For small areas, the census is useful in allowing for comparisons of labour market structure and performance between areas. Similarly, for small population groups, such as visible minorities, immigrants and language groups, the census assesses the occupational structure and labour market status, as well as the integration of these groups compared with the population as a whole. The census is also the only source of data covering the entire labour market, including Indian reserves, overseas households, and all provinces and territories. Given the size of the census sample, this level of industry and occupation detail is reliable at very detailed levels of geography.

Repairs and maintenance covers everything from outdoor patios to electrical systems. Additions includes garages, swimming pools and fences as well as extensions of the dwelling. Equipment replaced or newly installed includes plumbing fixtures, flooring, and built-in appliances. Data are presented separately for work contracted out and materials purchased separately.

In addition to an historical table, the publication tables present data by province, size of area of residence (urban/rural), household income group and expenditure level, type of dwelling, period of construction, age of reference person, and year the reference person moved to the dwelling.

Description:

The economic assimilation of immigrants is a key concern for economists and policy makers. The topic has been widely explored in terms of earnings assimilation of immigrants. Using the 1999 Survey of Financial Security, this study attempts to look at the issue from the wealth perspective.

Among married families, immigrants have higher wealth than their native-born counterparts from the 40th to 90th percentiles of the distribution, with the wealth gap ranging between $20,000 and $78,000. Among single families, immigrants have higher wealth from the 55th to 95th percentiles, with the wealth gap ranging between $14,000 and $145,000. At the bottom of the distribution, however, evidence suggests that immigrants have lower wealth, although the gap is generally below $10,000. Various decomposition results indicate that the age of the major income recipient (and of the spouse for married families) as well as factors affecting permanent income explain a significant portion of the wealth gap in cases where immigrant families have higher wealth than the native-born. At the bottom of the wealth distribution, however, the wealth gap cannot be explained by the age of the major income recipient, permanent income factors, or family size (or lone-parent status), suggesting that low-wealth immigrant families may behave differently than low-wealth Canadian-born families in their wealth accumulation process.

The wealth gap is also studied from a cohort perspective. Not surprisingly, recent immigrants have lower wealth than comparable Canadian-born families, and immigrants who arrived before 1976 have higher wealth. While immigrants who arrived in Canada between 1976 and 1985 are widely believed to initially have had more of an earnings disadvantage than their predecessors with respect to the Canadian-born, this study finds that, over the upper segment of the distribution, the wealth of this cohort is not significantly different from that of comparable Canadian-born families. But over the lower portion of the distribution, the cohort has lower wealth.

This issue of Juristat focuses on police-reported impaired driving and other traffic offences under the Criminal Code. In addition, analysis is provided on cases of impaired driving and other traffic violations processed in provincial adult criminal courts. The bulk of the analysis is based on police-reported impaired driving statistics, which refer to (1) incidents known to and substantiated by police and (2) persons charged with impaired driving. It touches on a number of points that may be useful in analysing and understanding a behaviour that is considered by some to be a major problem in our society. Included are the possible effects of legislation on impaired driving; identification of variables that may be contributing to trends; methods used by the police to combat the problem; and a brief explanation of dangerous driving. The data cover the period up to 2002.

Description: The primary source of data used in post index construction are periodic retail-price and cost-of-living surveys conducted at foreign locations by the foreign service personnel stationed there. Statistics Canada analyses this survey data. In addition to a variety of price information gathered from retail outlets patronized by Canadian personnel at the post, data are also obtained regarding their spending patterns, along with information on the availability of any special local purchasing facilities, and the extent to which staff make direct importation of consumer goods from other countries. The general aim is for full-scale surveys to be carried out at about three-year intervals. However, specific studies may be undertaken more or less frequently than this, depending on the volatility of retail price conditions in each particular country, the instability of exchange rates and the extent to which close monitoring of changes in the local retail price situation being faced by Canadian personnel can be achieved through reference to other statistical indicators.
