Description: This analytical report presents selected findings from the 2022 Indigenous Peoples Survey (formerly called the Aboriginal Peoples Survey). The 2022 IPS represents the sixth cycle of the survey and focuses on Indigenous children and their families. This report covers First Nations children living off reserve, Métis children and Inuit children aged 1 to 14, and includes topics such as sociodemographic characteristics, food security and basic needs, Indigenous languages and culture, child care and a number of health indicators. Disaggregated data by gender, age groups, and geography (provinces and territories, inside and ouside Inuit Nunangat, urban and rural) are presented when possible. The report also includes comparisons to the 2006 Aboriginal Children's Survey, the 2006 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, and the 2019 Canadian Health Survey of Children and Youth.

Description: The Indigenous Peoples Survey (IPS) is a national survey on the social and economic conditions of First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit. The objectives of the IPS are to identify the needs of these Indigenous groups and to inform policy and programming activities aimed at improving the well-being of Indigenous peoples. In this episode, we speak with Randy Morin and Belinda kakiyosew Daniels, who share their knowledge of the Cree language with learners at the Nêhiyawak Language Experience, about the wisdom encoded in Indigenous languages, as well as the opportunities for these languages and the barriers they face.

This study provides a broad understanding of the business environments in Indigenous communities - First Nations and Inuit - across Canada. These communities are typically located in rural low density or remote areas. The analysis profiles businesses located in Indigenous communities and compares them with businesses located in Non-Indigenous communities with similar population size parameters; hence, this analysis uses a geographic concept (i.e., the type of community) to connect the business dimension with the Indigenous dimension, as opposed to businesses whose ownership identifies as indigenous.

The profile is based on a set of straightforward business indicators, including business counts, entry and exit, age, revenue and profit indicators, which are tabulated by various classes of businesses defined for the study (industry groupings, employment size, revenue size, etc.). Some tables also feature province and territory geography. All business data are from Statistics Canada's Business Register (BR) January 2017 reference period. The 2011 Census geography is used as the January 2017 BR is based on that classification. The tables are presented by type of community. The results highlight both differences and similarities between the business environments of Indigenous communities and included Non-Indigenous communities.

The main objective of this report is to provide a statistical overview of the recent situation of Inuktitut in Nunavut and of its speakers, based on 2016 Census data, by showing how the use of the language at home and at work has changed since 2001.

This report also aims to provide information to various stakeholders who work to support the protection, promotion and revitalization of Inuktut in communities and among population segments, where its use is more limited or is declining over time.

Harvesting activities such as hunting, fishing, trapping and gathering wild plants have been part of Indigenous peoples' ways of living for millennia. They have endured despite the impact of colonization, including the impacts of residential schools, relocation to permanent settlements, the wage economy, and other constraints. This paper examines trends in harvesting activities, specifically hunting, fishing or trapping and gathering wild plants berries, among First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit using four cycles of the Aboriginal Peoples Survey (APS; 2001, 2006, 2012 and 2017). It also explores self-reported barriers to participation in harvesting activities and associated factors.

This Concepts and Methods Guide is intended to provide a detailed review of the 2017 APS with respect to its subject matter and methodological approaches. It is designed to assist APS data users by serving as a guide to the concepts and measures of the survey as well as the technical details of the survey's design, field work and data processing. This guide is meant to provide users with helpful information on how to use and interpret survey results. The discussion on data quality also allows users to review the strengths and limitations of the data for their particular needs.

Chapter 1 of this guide provides an overview of the 2017 APS by introducing the survey's background and objectives. Chapter 2 outlines the survey's themes and explains the key concepts and definitions used for the survey. Chapters 3 to 6 cover important aspects of the APS survey methodology, sampling design, data collection and processing. Chapters 7 and 8 review issues of data quality and caution users about comparing 2017 APS data with data from other sources. Chapter 9 outlines the survey products available to the public, including data tables, analytical articles and reference material. Many of the 60 or so Aboriginal languages in Canada are considered endangered to varying degrees for their long-term survival. Assessing language vitality or endangerment through the measurement of various factors can provide useful information to help ensure the continuity of a language. This paper illustrates how the 2011 Census of Population and the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS) can be used to measure some of the factors that provide information related to the vitality of Aboriginal languages.
