Micro-level information on buildings and physical infrastructure is increasing in relevance to social, economic and environmental statistical programs. Alternative data sources and advanced analytical methods can be used to generate some of this information. This paper presents how multiple convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are finetuned to classify buildings into different types (e.g., house, apartment, industrial) using their street-view images. The CNNs use the structure of the façade in the building’s image for classification. Multiple state-of-the-art CNNs are finetuned to accomplish the classification task. The trained models provide a proof of concept and show that CNNs can be used to classify buildings using their street-view imagery. The training and validation performance of the trained CNNs are measured. Furthermore, the trained CNNs are evaluated on a separate test set of street-view imagery. This approach can be used to augment the information available on openly accessible databases, such as the Open Database of Buildings.

While the impact of the sector’s medical research is well known, less known are the economic impacts of the sector on the Canadian economy, such as the value generated, the jobs supported and the investments made.

The federal government offers business innovation and growth support through program streams managed by its departments and agencies. In 2017, enterprises in the manufacturing sector accounted for almost one-quarter of the beneficiaries of this support and received almost one-third of the total value of support (Statistics Canada, 2020). The objective of this analysis is to assess the impact of federal growth and innovation support on the employment and revenue of beneficiary enterprises in the manufacturing sector between 2007 and 2017. This analysis suggests that enterprises that received federal support for growth and innovation experienced stronger employment and revenue growth relative to non-beneficiary enterprises. Over the three years following receipt of support, employment growth for beneficiary enterprises averaged 1.8% per year while, on average, enterprises that did not receive support experienced employment declines. Over the same period, the average annual revenue growth of beneficiary enterprises was higher than that of non-beneficiary enterprises by 4.6 percentage points.

The objective of this study is to develop statistical indexes to measure the intensity of digitalization in Canadian industries. Because of the ubiquitous presence of digitalization and businesses’ and individuals’ increasing reliance on digital products and services, it is essential to measure the digitalization in the Canadian economy to better understand its impact so that governments, businesses and other stakeholders can make informed decisions.

In recent years, technological advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning have broadened the realm of tasks that have the potential to be accomplished through automation technology. Consequently, these developments have raised questions about the future of work. Debate on this issue has focused primarily on the risk of job loss attributable to automation, with less attention given to how automation may change the nature of workers’ jobs. This study employs a task-based approach that shifts the focus from job replacement to changes in the nature of Canadians’ work. This approach views occupations as a set of tasks, allowing researchers to assess the effects of automation in the context of changes in occupational tasks.

This paper presents an open-source system that was developed for automatic estimation of building height from street-view images using Deep Learning (DL), advanced image processing techniques, and geospatial data. The goal of the developed system is to ultimately be used to enrich the Open Database of Buildings (ODB), that was published by Statistics Canada, as a part of the Linkable Open Data Environment (LODE). Some of the obtained results for building-height estimation are presented. Some challenging cases and the scalability of the system are discussed as well.

Survey findings establish that plants use strategic methods more than patents for intellectual property protection. The 2005 Survey of Innovation asked non-innovative manufacturing plants why they did not innovate; that is, why they did not introduce a new or significantly improved product or process to the market during the three-year reference period 2002 to 2004. Lack of market demand was the main response. An examination of repondents' other specified reasons shows that some non-innovators may actually be innovative although they do not perceive themselves to be. Innovative and non-innovative plants perceive success factors, such as developing and seeking new markets, in significantly different ways. Non-innovative plants are not expected to be innovative in the near future.

This paper examines the growth of human capital in Canadian and U.S. cities. Using pooled Census of Population data for 242 urban centres, we evaluate the link between long run employment growth and the supply of different types of skilled labour. The paper also examines whether the scientific capabilities of cities are influenced by amenities such as the size of the local cultural sector.

The first part of the paper investigates the contribution of broad and specialized forms of human capital to long-run employment growth. We differentiate between employed degree holders (a general measure of human capital) and degree holders employed in science and cultural occupations (specific measures of human capital). Our growth models investigate long-run changes in urban employment from 1980 to 2000, and control for other factors that have been posited to influence the growth of cities. These include estimates of the amenities that proxy differences in the attractiveness of urban areas.

The second part of the paper focuses specifically on a particular type of human capital'degree holders in science and engineering occupations. Our models evaluate the factors associated with the medium- and long-run growth of these occupations. Particular attention is placed on disentangling the relationships between science and engineering growth and other forms of human capital.

Results from the Survey of Innovation 2003 raised some interesting questions. First, an unexpected one-third of establishments in R&D services were not innovative. According to the guidelines of the Oslo Manual, innovative establishments are those that introduced a new or significantly improved product or process on to the market or into production, within a specified interval. Second, many of these non-innovative establishments indicated that satisfying existing customers was irrelevant to their firms success. This was very different response from all other types of firms.

This working paper provides a potential explanation of these unexpected results, as well as an overview of available information on establishments in R&D services (NAICS 5417) in the context of professional services generally. The paper assembles descriptive data to show that non-innovative establishments in R&D services differ significantly from other non-innovative establishments and, while not innovative, they are nevertheless highly inventive. It presents some evidence to suggest that they are venture firms (firms relying on infusions of investment capital rather than revenues from sales to sustain their operations) and proposes a specific set of indicators that would facilitate resolution of the nature of firms in this industry group.

The data are used, for instance, to plan and evaluate R&D tax incentive programs, to provide indicators of the state of industrial innovation and to complement national aggregates for scientific R&D expenditures and personnel. Among the topics covered are current and capital expenditures on research and development, energy R&D expenditures by area of technology, R&D expenditures as a percentage of company revenues, sources of funds for intramural R&D, personnel engaged in R&D, and foreign payments made and received for technological services.
