The Canadian System of National Accounts (CSNA) has evolved considerably over the past four decades. This article presents a brief account of the relationship between this system, as it stands today, and the international standard for national accounting, which has been established by the United Nations. The major similarities and differences between the two systems are highlighted. The paper then goes on to briefly summarize the present state of discussions concerning revisions to the international SNA standard.
Release date: 1990-11-30 - Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 13-604-M1990006Description:
Gross domestic product (GDP) is a key measure in the System of National Accounts, as well as an indispensable tool for economic analysis. This variable is available in current dollars or, in other words, expressed in the prices of the period to which each estimate applies. Two distinct parts exist within this current dollar measure: a volume component and a price component. This article focusses on the measure of GDP which expresses the volume of transactions in the economy (i.e., GDP expressed in real terms).
Release date: 1990-06-20 - Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 1301Description: The purpose of this statistical program is to provide information for current economic analysis. It provides a measure of the economic production which takes place within the geographical boundaries of Canada from an industry point of view.
- Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 1302Description: This survey provided estimates for calendar years of values of gross output, intermediate inputs and gross domestic product (GDP) at factor cost in current and constant prices for over 400 industries and aggregations at the Canada-total level.
- Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 1303Description: The primary mandate of this statistical program is to compile and disseminate current measures of Gross Domestic Product by industry, at the provincial and territorial level.
- Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 1401Description: The supply and use tables trace the production of commodities by domestic industries, combined with imports, through their uses by industries or as final consumption, investment or exports. The system provides measures of value added by industry and total GDP. The supply and use tables provide the basic information for the derivation of industry-by-industry input-output tables.
- Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 1402Description: Productivity measures the efficiency with which resources are employed in economic activity. Annual productivities series are widely watched by analysts, government policymakers and researchers to quantify the extent to which productivity contributes to economic growth and the standards of living over the long-run.
- Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 1529Description: This statistical program is amalgamated in record number 1537. The data reported in the Balance of Payments and Financial Flows surveys are used to produce statistics on Canada's balance of international payments and investment position.

- 883. National Tourism Indicators, Historical Estimates ArchivedTable: 13-220-XDescription: In the 1997 edition, new and revised benchmarks were introduced for 1992 and 1988. The indicators are used to monitor supply, demand and employment for tourism in Canada on a timely basis. The annual tables are derived using the National Income and Expenditure Accounts (NIEA) and various industry and travel surveys. Tables providing actual data and percentage changes, for seasonally adjusted current and constant price estimates are included. In addition, an analytical section provides graphs, and time series of first differences, percentage changes, and seasonal factors for selected indicators. Data are published from 1987 and the publication will be available on the day of release. New data are included in the demand tables for non-tourism commodities produced by non-tourism industries and in the employment tables covering direct tourism employment generated by non-tourism industries. This product was commissioned by the Canadian Tourism Commission to provide annual updates for the Tourism Satellite Account.Release date: 2003-01-08
- Table: 13F0063XDescription: The measurement of the economic impact of tourism has attracted increasing world-wide interest in the past few years. The development of a national Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) in Canada (1994), as well as a set of current quarterly indicators (1996), was a result of a demand for this information. Statistics Canada has now taken the analysis of tourism a step further with the development of the Provincial and Territorial Tourism Satellite Accounts (PTTSA).
The development of these accounts has come primarily at the request of the tourism community in Canada. The new regional accounts increase the analytical capability and further the understanding of tourism across Canada. The PTTSA are designed to measure the importance of tourism in terms of expenditures, gross domestic product (GDP) and employment. The concepts and methods used in the PTTSA generally follow the set of international TSA guidelines adopted by the United Nations Statistical Commission and strictly adhere to the principles of the System of National Accounts (SNA).
As a separate or satellite accounts, the PTTSA explicitly defines the tourism industry within the national accounts statistical system and measures its economic contribution to the economy. With their foundation in the framework of the Canadian SNA, the PTTSA allows for a comparison of tourism with other industries within a province or territory as well as showing the relative importance of tourism among provinces and territories. A tourism satellite account also provides the statistical basis for the development of tourism impact models. Thus, the PTTSA can contribute to government policy-making and business decisions concerning tourism.
This document discusses the concepts and definitions used, and it highlights the results of the PTTSA by region for the reference year 1996. The appendices include an overview of the methodology and data sources; the detailed tables showing tourism expenditures and GDP, as well as employment for each region; a list of tourism industries and commodities; and a glossary.
