  • Articles and reports: 16-002-X201700114825
    Description:

Natural resources play an important role in the Canadian economy because their extraction forms a significant component of Canada’s current income. Currently Canada’s natural resource asset accounts include energy resources, mineral resources and timber. The monetary value of a natural resource asset can be derived using several approaches such as market price, replacement cost and the net present value generated from the resource.

This study summarizes the methods used to integrate the value of selected natural resource assets into Canada’s quarterly national balance sheet accounts. It also explains the need to incorporate natural resource assets to provide a more comprehensive picture of Canada’s wealth. Data sources used include the quarterly national balance sheet accounts and the annual natural resource asset accounts.

This paper outlines the methodology being used to integrate the value of selected natural resource assets into the quarterly sectored national balance sheet accounts. It responds to recommendations in the revised United Nations System of National Accounts to include these values in the balance sheet. The addition of these asset values will significantly increase and improve measures of sectoral net worth.

    Description:

The article "Measuring ecosystem goods and services in Canada" presents preliminary results achieved through a two-year interdepartmental project to develop experimental ecosystem accounts and the required statistical infrastructure. It provides an overview of ecosystem accounting and valuation and presents several measures of the quantity and quality of ecosystems and ecosystem goods and services (EGS). These measures focus on land cover, human landscape modification, ecosystem potential of the boreal forest, biomass extraction, marine and coastal EGS, and wetland EGS. The report also includes a case study on the Thousand Islands National Park exploring monetary valuation of EGS and concludes with a research agenda for future work on this topic.

  • Articles and reports: 11F0027M2012079
    Geography: Canada
    Description:

This paper studies the growth of the Canadian resource economy and the contribution of trading gains arising from increasing terms of trade to real income growth from 1870 to 2010. It combines a historical account of the growth of a succession of natural resources--examining both the production and price history of agriculture, forestry, mining, and oil and gas--with an overview of the impact of these developments on Canadian well-being. It uses estimates of the difference between real income and real output growth, based on measurement theory from the System of National Accounts, to measure trading gains that arose from increasing terms of trade over the period.

  • Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 5114
Description: Natural resource asset accounts are one of the main elements of the United Nations System of Environmental-Economic Accounting which was adopted as an international statistical standard in 2012. Natural resource asset accounts measure quantities of natural resource assets (oil, natural gas, minerals, and timber) and the annual changes in these assets due to natural processes and human activity. These accounts, which are recorded using both physical and monetary units, form the basis of the estimates of Canada's natural resource wealth that are integrated into the Canadian national balance sheet accounts.

  • Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 5115
Description: Physical flow accounts are one of the main elements of the United Nations System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) which was adopted as an international statistical standard in 2012. These accounts record, in physical units of measure, the supply and use of natural inputs (e.g. cubic metres of water), products (e.g. terajoules of gasoline), and residuals (e.g. kilotonnes of carbon dioxide emissions).
