This table presents experimental counts of businesses that open, close, or continue their operations each month for various levels of geographic and industry detail across Canada going back to January 2015. The data are available as series that are adjusted for seasonality. The level of geographic detail includes national, provincial and territorial, as well as census metropolitan areas (CMA). The data are also broken down by two-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) with some common aggregations, including one for the total business sector for national, provincial and territorial levels of geography.

The RT-LBCI is released as an experimental statistic. It is intended to provide a real-time signal on business activities following the disruptions brought about by the pandemic and through the recovery phase.

Description: The Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act (ESTMA) Data Portal is a collaboration between Statistics Canada and Natural Resources Canada, which administers the ESTMA. The ESTMA helps the Government of Canada deter corruption in the extractive sector by requiring extractive entities that are active in Canada to publicly disclose, on an annual basis, certain types of payments made to governments in Canada and abroad. The goal of the data portal is to increase the accessibility and utility of the payment information collected under the ESTMA by bringing together all available ESTMA data in one online location, and further enriching the payment data with analytical functions that help users to leverage the complete ESTMA dataset. The database has also been designed with mobility in mind to ensure that users and stakeholders have mobile access to ESTMA data.

The interactive tool presents information on activities of multinational enterprises at the international and national level. At the international level, users can see the importance of foreign multinationals on the Canadian economy as well as the similar role of Canadian multinationals in foreign economies, by country. At the national level, information on activities of multinational enterprises in Canada are included, by type of multinationals, province and industry. Activities include a number of selected variables such as number of enterprises, number of jobs, assets, revenues, merchandise trade and value added.

Data on the activities of Canadian and foreign multinational enterprises in Canada, for example the number of jobs, assets, operating revenues, international merchandise trade or gross domestic product, as a share of the Canadian economy.

Description: In Canada and other advanced economies, the share of zombie firms, defined as businesses that perform poorly over a long period of time without exiting, has been rising over the past few decades. Recent studies have shown that the share of zombie firms in Canada could potentially be the highest in the world. However, these studies for Canada are based only on publicly traded Canadian firms. This paper presents new evidence on zombification using not only publicly traded firms but also Canadian controlled private corporations, which make up a large proportion of businesses in Canada.

This article examines these programs including the characteristics of recipients using preliminary data from the Canadian COVID-19 Business Support Measures Database (CCBSM), a standardized set of data covering government support programs for businesses.

This analysis is based on the Rural Canada Business Profiles (RCBP) which is a database built from business tax returns. With several breakdowns available along the theme of rural and urban areas, the RCBP version released by Statistics Canada on January 13, 2023, provides data for 2020. Future updates of the RCBP, expected to be produced on an annual basis, will add more recent years as fresh data become available. The RCBP could be a useful and timely analytical tool in efforts to gain insights on trends and transformations in the rural business environment just as the economy enters the post-pandemic period.
