The Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) is conducted by Statistics Canada in partnership with Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada. It is the most extensive national survey on physical health measures ever conducted in the country. Data collection consists of two steps, a personal interview at the respondent's household followed later by a visit to the CHMS mobile clinic where physical measurements and blood and urine samples are taken.

The CHMS captures a broad portrait of the health of Canadians by gathering baseline data on a variety of concerns, including cardiovascular health, nutritional status, chronic diseases and physical activity, as well as exposure to infectious diseases and environmental contaminants. The survey collects health information that can't be otherwise captured, or that may be inaccurately reported, through self-report questionnaires or health care records.

This report examines the health of Canadians by focusing on demography, health status, health behaviours, and the environment. The aging of the population provides a context for the report. Measures that reflect physical, mental and social well-being are presented, followed by indicators of positive and negative behaviours that are known to influence health status. Finally, indicators of the social and physical environments in which we live and work are examined. Together, these Health Indicators highlight the health of Canadians at a national and provincial/territorial level. They provide benchmarks for comparisons over time and place, from regional to international levels.

This report celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Health Indicators project. Since 1999, Statistics Canada and the Canadian Institute for Health Information have collaborated on developing and providing a broad range of indicators for health regions across Canada.

Health indicators are measures of health and of the factors which influence health. As such they can be used to inform health policy, manage the health care system, enhance our understanding of the broader determinants of health, as well as to identify gaps in the health status and outcomes for specific populations. While there are countless indicators that could be calculated, the challenge is to identify which are the most important to measure and track; what types of indicators best reflect the needs of those who use them; which of the current indicators are no longer relevant and may therefore be dropped or replaced by more suitable measures; and finally, how can the cross-cutting dimension of equity be addressed in the evaluation of the indicator set. These and other questions were discussed at the Third Health Indicators Consensus Conference, held in March 2009. The results of the conference are summarized in this report.

New articles are published electronically each month.

The mandate of the Analytical Studies Branch (ASB) is to provide high-quality, relevant and timely information on economic, health and social issues that are important to Canadians. The branch strategically makes use of expert knowledge and a large range of statistical sources to describe, draw inferences from, and make objective and scientifically supported deductions about the evolving nature of the Canadian economy and society. Research questions are addressed by applying leading-edge methods, including microsimulation and predictive analytics using a range of linked and integrated administrative and survey data. In supporting greater access to data, ASB linked data are made available to external researchers and policy makers to support evidence-based decision making. Research results are disseminated by the branch using a range of mediums (i.e., research papers, studies, infographics, videos, and blogs) to meet user needs. The branch also provides analytical support and training, feedback, and quality assurance to the wide range of programs within and outside Statistics Canada.

This paper describes the process that led to the creation of the new Disability Screening Questions (DSQ), jointly developped by Statistics Canada and Employment and Social Development Canada. The DSQ form a new module which can be put on general population surveys to allow comparisons of persons with and without a disability. The paper explains why there are two versions of the DSQ—a long and a short one—, the difference between the two, and how each version can be used.
