Description: Using data from the Canadian Survey on Working Conditions, this article provides a profile of workers aged 15 to 69 who used artificial intelligence (AI) and automation technologies at work during the previous year. The article focuses on generative AI which refers to tools trained on large datasets that are used to create new content and to support tasks such as answering questions and problem-solving. Description: The Canadian Active Living Environments (Can-ALE) project was developed in 2019 to provide a standardized, pan-Canadian indicator of how supportive neighbourhood built environments are for physical activity and active transportation, enabling comparisons across places and over time. Can-ALE 1.0 produced measures for the 2006 and 2016 census years, but it did not include 2011 or 2021. As well, the data and processing steps were not packaged in a fully reproducible format, limiting longitudinal analyses and replication. In this study, the original measure was replicated and extended by developing Can-ALE 2.0, an open-source, reproducible R-based workflow to generate Can-ALE metrics for the 2011, 2016, and 2021 census years.

Description: The Inter-corporate ownership product is the most authoritative and comprehensive source of information available on corporate ownership; a unique directory of "who owns what" in Canada. It provides up-to-date information reflecting recent corporate takeovers and other substantial changes. Ultimate corporate control is determined through a careful study of holdings by corporations, the effects of options, insider holdings, convertible shares and interlocking directorships. The number of corporations that make up the hierarchy of structures totals approximately 50,000.

The information that is presented is based on non-confidential returns filed by Canadian corporations under the Corporations Returns Act and on research using public sources such as internet sites. The data are presented in an easy-to-read tiered format, illustrating at a glance the hierarchy of subsidiaries within each corporate structure. The entries for each corporation provide both the country of control and the country of residence.

The product covers every individual corporation that is part of a group of commonly controlled corporations with combined assets exceeding 600 million dollars or combined revenue exceeding 200 million dollars. Individual corporations with debt obligations or equity owing to non-residents exceeding a net book value of 1 million dollars are covered as well.

Description: The paper attempts to examine some of the procedures used for compensation for non-response. Using the concept of response probabilities, a simple response - non-response error model is developed and the components of response and non-response errors are identified under various imputation procedures. A graph is also given in order to provide an idea of the magnitude of the non­response bias in a particular situation. Two examples of the practical application of imputation are discussed.

Description: This paper presents results on rotation group biases in the Canadian Labour Force Survey (LFS). The biases are studied in detail by decomposition into components responsible for the biases. Also, a comparison between the old and the new LFS is done on the basis of 1975 parallel run and differences are analyzed. Some conclusions are drawn and recommendations for other studies presented.

Description: To obtain estimates of means or totals for a universe, a sample of units is often drawn to represent the universe and these units are then surveyed. One of the most important procedures used in the selection of the units is that of stratification, whereby the universe is split up into strata and independent samples of units are drawn from each stratum. A stratification index is developed to indicate the approximate fractional reduction in the sampling variance from that which would result if no stratification were undertaken. Also the methodology is extended to examine the effect of stratification on the sampling variance at different levels of stratification through the concept of a summary index. The stratification index is also extended to the case of ratio estimates using independent source data to re-weight the sample data. The index has been applied to the Canadian Labour Force Survey (LFS), a typical multi-stage stratified sample where ratio estimation, using projected age-sex population estimates is applied and empirical data are presented and analyzed.

Description: The 1974 Survey of Housing Units was carried out by Statistics Canada on behalf of the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation during the autumn of 1974. Statistics Canada's responsibilities on this project included the design and implementation of all phases of the survey up to and including the production of "clean" micro data tapes. The sponsoring department was in turn responsible for the specification of objectives and data requirements and for the analysis of the resulting data.

This report, which is a modification of the summary report produced by the project team at the conclusion of the project, provides a general description of the survey and the work done by Statistics Canada on the survey.

Description: Published reports for the 1976 Census will include estimates of Total Variance as indicators of the reliability of the figures in these reports. In order to obtain these estimates of Total Variance, an Interpenetrating Design Experiment was incorporated into the collection methods for a sample of enumeration areas. In this paper we derive the formula for Total Variance in terms of variances due to sampling, correlated response and simple response. We then show how the Total Variance, and its components, can be estimated from the design and we give the estimators that will be used for the 1976 Census. The estimates of sampling and correlated response variance are unbiased but the simple response variance estimate is not.

Description: The 1971 Reverse Record Check is one of the most important studies that were carried out as part of the 1971 Census Evaluation Programme. Its main purpose was to investigate the incidence of under-enumeration in the 1971 Census. To do this, a frame containing all persons who should be enumerated in the 1971 Census was built up from the 1966 Census returns, plus birth and immigrant registrations. A random sample was selected from the frame and each selected person was traced to his current Census address. Current Census returns were then checked to see whether or not the selected person was enumerated. Sample figures were weighted up to the population level to obtain estimates of undercoverage. This paper gives a general description of the methodology of this study, and indicates some of the resulting improvements incorporated for 1976.

Description: Three Ontario pilot hog surveys were conducted in 1975 to test a sampling method based on the simultaneous use of two list frames. This paper describes the different aspects of the experience. Particular emphasis is given to the double frame methodology such as discussed by Hartley [11]. Optimal allocation of the sample between frames is considered, with revision for each following survey based on all the accumulated results.

Description: The 1974 Pilot Auto Exit Survey tested three variants of a handout, mailback questionnaire for U.S. visitors leaving Canada, in a search for a reliable low-cost method of data collection. The sample design was based on a personal interview survey done in Ontario in 1973/74. This design, results of the Pilot, comparison with the Ontario results and some conclusions are presented in this paper.

Description: A special class of missing data problems is discussed, namely that of typical survey data whereby zeros dominate the multivariate response space. Here, techniques which impute means (whether conditional or unconditional) distort rather than improve the quality of the data. A probabilistic model is described which provides reasonable estimates, but also upholds the integrity of the data base. Results are given from a comparative study of the proposed methodology with other estimation/imputation models.

An institutional unit is defined as an economic entity that is capable, in its own right, of owning assets, incurring liabilities, and engaging in economic activities and in transactions with other entities. It includes the sectors of education, health, general government and government business enterprise sectors for all levels of government in Canada, annually, since 2008.

Description: Spatial information products provide users with data for visualization, reference, mapping and spatial analysis using geographical information systems (GIS). Available files include spatial environmental data as well as documentation and metadata. This information is released as part of a suite of products associated with the Census of Environment (CoE). The CoE organizes data about Canada’s natural environment using the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting – Ecosystem Accounting international statistical standard, which takes a spatial approach to accounting for Canada’s ecosystems and natural capital.

"Urban greenness" is a measure that assesses the condition and health of an urban landscape. Vegetation contributes to more livable, beautiful communities by helping to clean the air, moderate the local climate, control water flow and provide habitats for wildlife.

Annual average normalized difference vegetation index datasets and annual green/grey classifications are available for the years 2000 to 2025 and cover Canada south of 60°N.

Description: The Survey on the Official Language Minority Population (SOLMP) user guide contains a description of the survey, along with survey concepts and definitions and an overview of the content development. The target and survey populations, the sample design and sample size are described in the Methodology section, while the Data Collection module provides the collection period and instrument, modes of collection, collection and communications strategies and response rates.

Updates to the guide include descriptions of the survey data processing, survey error and weighting, and guidelines for tabulations and analysis. Appendices will provide a listing of questions and variables which changed between the current and previous occasions of the survey, as well as various primers on the survey methodology.

Description: Departmental Results Reports (DRRs) are part of the Estimates family of documents. Estimates documents support appropriation acts, which specify the amounts and broad purposes for which funds can be spent by the government. The Estimates document family has three parts.

Part I (Government Expenditure Plan) provides an overview of federal spending.

Part II (Main Estimates) lists the financial resources required by individual departments, agencies and Crown corporations for the upcoming fiscal year.

Part III (Departmental Expenditure Plans) consists of two documents. Departmental Plans (DPs) are expenditure plans for each appropriated department and agency (excluding Crown corporations).
