- Articles and reports: 16-001-M2009009Geography: CanadaDescription:
The Canadian Vehicle Survey (CVS) is a voluntary, vehicle-based survey that provides quarterly and annual estimates of road vehicle activity. This includes vehicle-kilometres and passenger-kilometres as well as a number of other elements related to the trip such as sex of driver, time of day and season.
In 2007, the sample size of the CVS was increased in order to address a data gap regarding consumption of fuel for personal use. The CVS was seen as a possible solution to getting better insight into the household component of fuel consumption. By differentiating between types of vehicle use the CVS can provide estimates of fuel consumed for personal and business purposes.
The aims of this report are twofold. The first is to present a national, annual profile of vehicle fuel consumption by type of use. The second is to compare the fuel quantities produced by the CVS with other known data sources, especially those data generated by Statistics Canada. This data comparison will provide grounding for future work using this data. Explanations are put forward to account for discrepancies between the data.

Release date: 2007-04-23 - 53C0008Description:
This service offers custom tabulations from the National Private Vehicle Use Survey. The purpose of the survey is to provide measures of vehicle fuel use and the determinants of fuel use. This information will provide the basis for future policy decisions aimed at reducing the fuel consumed by personal-use vehicles.
To this end, it is important to understand how consumers use their vehicles in order to design adequate energy efficiency programs and alternative energy programs. The specific objectives of the survey are: provide national estimates of annual fuel use for personal-use vehicles (includes passenger cars/light trucks and vans); provide national estimates of total distance driven; identify the main factors in the purchase of a vehicle; identify in a general fashion how households use their vehicles; develop driver profiles by sex, age, marital status, income, education and occupational group; develop vehicle profiles by vehicle body type, model year, number of cylinders, transmission type, and presence or absence of air conditioning.

- Articles and reports: 62F0014M2022008Description:
The Canadian Consumer Price Index (CPI) accounts for the sale of used vehicles by including a net expenditure weight for used vehicles in the index for the purchase of passenger vehicles. However, price changes for new cars were used as a proxy for used cars to ensure price change for this product was still covered to the best extent possible. The research paper outlines the proposed plan for introducing used vehicle prices, including data and methods. With the introduction of the 2021 CPI basket, a new approach for measuring price change in used vehicles is recommended to replace the previous method of measuring used vehicles price change by proxy.

Release date: 2002-06-28 - Notices and consultations: 13F0026M1999001Description:
The main objectives of a new Canadian survey measuring asset and debt holding of families and individuals will be to update wealth information that is over one decade old; to improve the reliability of the wealth estimates; and, to provide a primary tool for analysing many important policy issues related to the distribution of assets and debts, future consumption possibilities, and savings behaviour that is of interest to governments, business and communities.
This paper is the document that launched the development of the new asset and debt survey, subsequently renamed the Survey of Financial Security. It looks at the conceptual framework for the survey, including the appropriate unit of measurement (family, household or person) and discusses measurement issues such as establishing an accounting framework for assets and debts. The variables proposed for inclusion are also identified. The paper poses several questions to readers and asks for comments and feedback.
