Additional information
This interactive dashboard provides access to current and historical data for the New Motor Vehicle Registration Survey in a dynamic and customizable format. It allows the user to compare and analyze new vehicle registration data by fuel type, geography and vehicle type.
This web-based application is updated annually.
Definitions
- Gasoline
- Gasoline vehicles are vehicles powered with an internal combustion engine using gasoline fuel.
- Diesel
- Diesel vehicles are vehicles powered with an internal combustion engine using diesel fuel.
- BEV
- Battery electric vehicles are vehicles powered solely by a rechargeable battery pack and produce zero tailpipe emissions.
- HEV
- Hybrid electric vehicles are vehicles with a rechargeable battery pack, which provides an extra boost of power, in addition to having an internal combustion engine.
- PHEV
- Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are vehicles with a rechargeable battery pack and an internal combustion engine. They run on electric power until the battery is drained and then the internal combustion engine takes over for propulsion.
- Other fuel types
- Other fuel types include liquid propane, natural gas, hydrogen, etc.
- ZEV
- Zero-emission vehicles are battery electric vehicles (BEV) or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) that have the potential to produce no tailpipe emissions.
- Total vehicle type
- Total vehicle type excludes buses, trailers, recreational vehicles, motorcycles, snowmobiles, golf carts, etc.
- Multi-purpose passenger vehicle
- Multi-purpose vehicles include sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and Crossovers.
- Vans
- Vans include all minivans and cargo vans.
- Pick up trucks
- Pick up trucks correspond to gross vehicle weight rate (GVWR) ranging from 0-14000lb (e.g., classes 1, 2, and 3).
Notes
Data for Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Alberta are currently not available due to contractual limitations of the existing data sharing agreement, however, they are included in the Canada total.
All fuel types category does not include other fuel types.
How to use
Instructions to maximize the use of this interactive tool
Use this tool to see data from the latest vehicle registration estimates. All values in the reference header and graphs will automatically update based on the user’s selection.
To select a specific fuel type, click on the desired fuel type toggle at the top of the tool.
To select a specific province, click the desired province in the “New vehicles registered by fuel type” bar chart.
To select a specific reference year, click a year from the “reference year” dropdown menu.
