    Description: At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an overrepresentation of males in COVID-19 deaths worldwide, with Canada reporting more female COVID-19 deaths. This study examines the overrepresentation of female COVID-19 deaths in Canada, with an immigration lens. This study also evaluates whether there is a sex difference in COVID-19 deaths by immigrant status in Canada and, if so, for which age groups and in which provinces or census metropolitan areas (CMAs).

    This study provides the first socioeconomic profile of immigrant women board directors and officers in Canada from an intersectional lens. Linking data from the Corporations Returns Act with those from the Longitudinal Immigration database, exploratory estimates are presented. The study analyzes characteristics of immigrants at admission and disparities in family, work and income characteristics, mainly by gender and immigrant status. Further, it informs on the types of businesses in which diverse women executives contribute to corporate governance and strategic decision making.

When possible, labour market indicators are examined by sex, education and immigrant status.

The details of this selection process vary among countries. For example, in the US, the temporary workers are typically sponsored by the employers in their bid to become permanent residents. In Canada, the temporary residents are selected for permanent residency by the government based on a set of largely human capital criteria, although employers may play a role in some selection pathways. Viewed in a generic manner, the two step process presents both advantages and risks. This article provides an overview of such potential advantages and risks. It is the first of five articles on the two-step selection process.

    The educational attainment of the Canadian population has been rising rapidly in recent decades. There is concern that educational expansion has outpaced demand, leading to an increased prevalence of over-education. Over-education is defined as educational qualification that exceeds what is required to adequately perform the job. This study uses census data to document the rising supply of university-educated workers by immigration status from 2001 to 2016. It further examines trends in over-education among university-educated workers who are recent immigrants (those who arrived in Canada 1 to 10 years before the census) and those who are Canadian-born youth (aged 25 to 34). For each population group, this study examines the extent to which the observed trend in over-education status is associated with changes in demographic characteristics and supply and demand factors.

    Using Statistics Canada data from multiple cycles of the General Social Survey, this chapter of Women in Canada examines gender differences in the allocation of time to both primary activities and simultaneous activities (i.e., those done concurrently with other activities), focusing on unpaid work and leisure. It also estimates the total work burden of women and men. In addition to gender, age, family type, and immigrant status may affect time use. For this reason, gender differences in time use among these sub-populations are explored.
