The Canadian Statistical Geospatial Explorer empowers users to discover Statistics Canada's geo‑enabled data down to the smallest level of detail available, the dissemination area. Users can find, explore then export data in various formats to use in their workflows. Users can also customize the map and change basemaps (satellite imagery, topography, etc.) to view data in a different context.

COVID‑19

Statistics Canada is committed to empowering governments, businesses and Canadians alike with the information they need to respond to, and recover from this pandemic. To help, we have identified indicators that may be relevant to the COVID 19 situation. These indicators have been marked with an asterisk (*) within the selection boxes of the Select Data panel. These indicators will be updated as we identify more to meet stakeholder needs. For information on COVID‑19 cases, please go to Coronavirus disease (COVID‑19).

What’s New

New data on zero-emission vehicle registrations are available as of April 24, 2023.

New housing indicators are available for you to explore as of February 14, 2023.

New police-reported crime indicators are available for you to explore as of August 9, 2022.

New data on urban greenness are available as of February 22, 2022.

Select Data

Search through thousands of indicators from a single screen.

The Explorer tool launches with the 'Select' tab open. In the main window, the map shows a default indicator chosen by Statistics Canada.

Open the Select data panel. Click on the "Select" tab at the top right corner.

The application by default will display the Select tab. You can open the “Select” tab from the toolbar at the top right corner.

Select a 'Subject', then 'Theme' to view a list of products… Pick the product you want to explore!

Selecting data is fast and easy. Select your 'Subject' and the Explorer tool will list all 'Themes' belonging to it. Select a theme, then pick a 'Category (Product)' to explore.

Apply filters to your data product, select a 'Value to Display' and the 'Geographic Level' of the data to explore.

Once you have selected your product, the Explorer tool will show you all the possible 'Filters', 'Dates', 'Values' and 'Geographic Level' of detail that you can explore. First, select the filter you would like to apply, followed by the value to display. The Explorer tool will only display geographic levels where data is available for your chosen selection.

Click 'Apply' to update the map ‑ OR ‑ Click “Cancel” to reset your selections.

Click on the 'Apply' button to Explore your data on the map. You can also click the “Cancel” button to reset your selections in the dropdown boxes.

Style the map

You have your own style. Now you can apply it to our data!

The Explorer empowers you to add your style and create your custom maps.

Click the "Map legend and settings" icon in the left toolbar

First, click on the Map legend and settings icon located in the left toolbar to access the style panel.

Click on the "Style" tab to access the style panel.

Then, click on the Style tab to open the panel and access all the options available.

Select the “Classification method” to group data by and to calculate the default breaks.

Style the map however you like. Select a classification method that you want to use to create groupings.

You can change the number of breaks, hide some breaks from the map legend or change the end values to recalculate the breaks.

Next, choose the number of breaks you want to see. TIP: The human eye has difficulty with more than 7 breaks. You can hide some breaks from the map legend by clicking the eye icon. You can also change the values of a break by entering a new end value.

Choose the appropriate option to access different colour schemes.

Choose the type of colour scheme you want to use, between sequential or diverging, with the option to reverse the order of the colours.

Your map, your colours. The Explorer allows you to style the map according to your preferred colour scheme.

Choose the colours that suit you best. Select one of the colour scheme in the horizontal scrollable list.

Click on "Apply" to refresh the map with your styling or "Cancel" to leave it as is.

Once you have made all your selections, click on the 'Apply' button to update the map with your style. You can also click on “Cancel” to reset the panel without changing the styling.

Export data

Export all data on the map… with the click of a button.

You can export and download all the data on the map in different formats.

Click on the “Export” tab at the top right corner.

First, click on the Export tab at the top right corner to open the Export panel.

Select the desired output format, for example XLSX.

Then, select the preferred output format, between Shapefile, GeoJSON, TXT or XLSX. In this example, XLSX is picked.

Check the "Selection only" checkbox if you want to export only the map selections.

You can export only the selections on the map by clicking the Selection only checkbox. If not checked, you export all data.

Click the Export button to start the export process.

Once ready, click the link to download the file.

Once the file is ready, a Click to download file link will appear.

Repeat steps with another format, for example Shapefile.

You can repeat the same steps to export data in another format, like Shapefile.

New and improved

Create custom bookmarks

You can create your custom bookmarks by clicking the bookmark icon on the left toolbar. Then click Add bookmark, type a descriptive title and click Add to confirm.

Display the legend

You can access the legend by clicking the Map legend and settings icon on the left toolbar, then click the Legend tab.

Opacity slider available

You can increase or reduce the opacity of the map by moving the opacity slider in the Style panel.

New basemaps available

There are new basemaps available. You can access them by clicking the Map legend and settings icon on the left toolbar, then click the Basemaps tab.

Type text to filter lists

In the Select panel on the right, you can type text in the boxes to filter the list of choices available.

Zoom and multi-selection

You can use some specific keyboard and mouse actions to zoom on the map or select multiple geographies. To zoom, use Shift + hold click, then drag. To multi-select, use Shift + single click, then drag.
