    Description: This product contains contiguously settled area (CSA) boundaries for a subset of Canadian population centres for 2010 and 2020 with user documentation. The CSA boundaries are derived from land cover data and represent the geographic extent of settled areas based on their physical footprint on the landscape. The boundaries can be used for reference, mapping and spatial analysis of settled areas and urban ecosystems. The CSA boundaries are created and maintained under the umbrella of the Census of Environment, and will support Statistics Canada's ecosystem accounting efforts.

    Description: This webinar will provide you with an introduction to the Canadian Statistical Geospatial Explorer (CSGE). This interactive mapping tool was designed at Statistics Canada to give users the ability to explore our data, create custom maps and download geo-enabled data into users' own workflows. The CSGE allows users to visualize data at granular levels such as dissemination areas and other geographies like provinces/territories and health regions. The CSGE includes a range of COVID-19 relevant indicators on health, demographic profile and socio-economic conditions of the Canadian population, all derived from Statistics Canada data holdings.

    The webinar covers basic functionalities of the Canadian Statistical Geospatial Explorer such as: finding and exploring data; exporting data in various formats and bringing it into your workflow; customizing maps; and changing base maps (satellite imagery, topography, etc.) to view data in a different context.

    Description: The article "The changing landscape of Canadian metropolitan areas" provides an analysis of land cover and land use change in Canada's largest cities. It focuses on the change in built-up area, arable land and natural and semi-natural land in and around CMAs from 1971 to 2011. The report includes CMA-specific geographical profiles that include tables, charts and maps as well as links to a wealth of other relevant information.

    The June 2016 update includes the addition of spatial data files (ArcGIS®, file extension: .shp) for each CMA that can be downloaded from the HTML version of the publication.

    Description:

    This paper proposes an approach for small area prediction based on data obtained from periodic surveys and censuses. We apply our approach to obtain population predictions for the municipalities not sampled in the Brazilian annual Household Survey (PNAD), as well as to increase the precision of the design-based estimates obtained for the sampled municipalities. In addition to the data provided by the PNAD, we use census demographic data from 1991 and 2000, as well as a complete population count conducted in 1996. Hierarchically non-structured and spatially structured growth models that gain strength from all the sampled municipalities are proposed and compared.

    This paper summarizes the major trends in the series on the spatial analysis of crime conducted by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics (CCJS) using geographic information system technology in Canadian cities. The main purpose of this analytical series was to explore the relationships between the distribution of crime and the demographic, socio economic and functional characteristics of neighbourhoods. Questions addressed include: How are police reported criminal incidents distributed across city neighbourhoods? Is the crime rate in a neighbourhood associated with factors that are specific to that neighbourhood, such as its demographic, socio-economic, housing and land use characteristics? Is the crime rate in a neighbourhood influenced by nearby neighbourhoods? These questions were explored using data from the 2001 Census of Population, the Incident-Based Uniform Crime Reporting Survey (UCR2), and land use data provided by the various cities.
