Description: Research in organizational psychology, occupational health, and other disciplines in the social sciences has established the importance of employee psychological health for organizations, irrespective of their sector or size. This study assesses employee psychological health, a wide range of workplace psychosocial factors as predictors of employee psychological health, and several individual and organizational outcomes of employee psychological health in a Canadian public service organization during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2. Are “immortals” an issue for survival estimates derived from Canadian Cancer Registry data?

Description: The validity of survival estimates from cancer registry data depends, in part, on the identification of the deaths of deceased cancer patients. People whose deaths are missed seemingly live on forever and are informally referred to as “immortals”, and their presence in registry data can result in inflated survival estimates. This study assesses the issue of immortals in the Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) using a recently proposed method that compares the survival of long-term survivors of cancers for which “statistical” cure has been reported with that of similar people from the general population.

This study also evaluates whether there is a sex difference in COVID-19 deaths by immigrant status in Canada and, if so, for which age groups and in which provinces or census metropolitan areas (CMAs).

10. Intersecting risk factors for physical inactivity among Canadian adults

Description: On average, 45% of Canadian adults meet the recommended 150 minutes per week of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Using six combined cycles of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (2007 to 2019), this study examines how the percentage of Canadian males and females aged 18 to 79 years meeting the physical activity recommendation differs across socio-demographic, family arrangement and health factors. The purpose of this paper is to determine how sex, age and family arrangement intersect with known risk factors for physical inactivity to identify groups within the Canadian population most at risk of not meeting the physical activity recommendation.

The data presented in this infographic were collected during wave 5 of the Canadian Social Survey, which was conducted from April to June 2022. This infographic focuses specifically on trust in neighbours, based on responses to the question “How many people do you trust in your neighbourhood?”, where the response categories included “Most of the people,” “Many of the people,” “A few of the people” and “Nobody.” Results are presented according to selected demographic characteristics, including gender and age group. 15. Cybervictimization and mental health among Canadian youth

Description: Cybervictimization has emerged as a potentially serious form of victimization and has been associated with negative mental health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, disordered eating, and suicidality. However, very little research has examined the prevalence and correlates of cybervictimization among diverse subpopulations of youth. Using data from the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth, this study describes the proportion of Canadian adolescents who have experienced cybervictimization and how this proportion may differ among subpopulations of Canadian adolescents (based on gender identity, ethnicity, and sexual orientation). This study also examines how these sociodemographic predictors are associated with the experience of cybervictimization and associations between cybervictimization and adolescent mental health and whether these associations differ among subpopulations.

Description: According to recent Canadian estimates, over two in five Canadians will likely develop cancer in their lifetime, and one in four is expected to die of it. The lifetime probabilities of developing cancer and dying from cancer are useful summary statistics that describe the impact of cancer within a population. However, there is little information on how lifetime probabilities of developing cancer and dying from cancer have changed over time. This study aims to present detailed lifetime probabilities of developing cancer and dying from cancer by sex and cancer type, and to describe changes in these lifetime probabilities over time among the Canadian population.

17. Internationally educated health care professionals in Canada: Sociodemographic characteristics and occupational distribution

Description: Labour shortages in health care professions have become a pressing issue across many Canadian jurisdictions and were especially exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. To help address these shortages, federal, provincial and territorial governments have implemented measures to facilitate the entry of skilled immigrants with health care qualifications into their respective professions, among other government actions to strengthen the health workforce. However, comprehensive data on the numbers, sociodemographic characteristics and labour market outcomes of internationally educated health professionals (IEHPs) remain scarce. This article provides estimates of the number of IEHPs in Canada based on 2021 Census data.

18. The local restaurant environment in relation to eating out and sugary drink intake among Canadian children and youth

Description: Accessibility of food retail in communities may play a role in shaping the food choices of local residents. Canadian youth are frequent patrons of fast-food and other restaurant types, such as full-service restaurants and cafés. Studies linking local exposure to various restaurant types with diet-related behaviours and health outcomes have, to date, revealed mixed results. The current study uses a recently developed high-quality pan-Canadian dataset of food retail measures and a large population-based sample of Canadian children and youth to examine links between the local restaurant environment and the frequency of eating food from restaurants and intake of sugary drinks.

Description: The Public Health Agency of Canada monitors the psychological and social well-being of Canadian youth using the Children’s Intrinsic Needs Satisfaction Scale (CINSS). Validation analyses of the CINSS have been conducted, but not in the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth (CHSCY), a more recent and representative national survey with a different sampling frame, collection method and other measured outcomes. This study tested the validity of the CINSS in the 2019 CHSCY.

Description: Using new data from the Labour Force Survey, this article explores how the COVID-19 pandemic and increasing levels of unmet labour demand in the health care industry have affected the health care labour force. Specifically, this article looks at various aspects of employment quality among health care workers, including absences, overtime and wages, and changes in work quality over the course of the pandemic. The article proceeds to explore how these changing job characteristics affected health care workers and their likelihood to leave their current positions.
