This study examines Canadians’ access to and use of pharmaceuticals using data from the 2021 Survey on Access to Health Care and Pharmaceuticals During the Pandemic, collected from March to May 2021. First, it examines the proportion and characteristics of Canadians who reported not having prescription insurance to cover medication costs, as well as those who reported that their prescription insurance was affected by the pandemic. Next, medication use, out-of-pocket spending on prescription medication, and non-adherence to prescription medication because of cost were examined. Analyses are presented across province, immigration status, and racialized groups, among other sociodemographic variables, and thus offers insight into potential inequities in access to pharmaceuticals in Canada.

8. How sedentary are Canadian adults? It depends on the measure

Canadian adults spend a large proportion of their day engaged in sedentary behaviour, which in excess, is a risk factor for hypertension, obesity, depression, chronic conditions and premature mortality. Using data from the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) and the new Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults aged 18-64 years and 65 years and older, the purpose of this study is to compare the percentages of Canadians meeting three different sedentary thresholds (less than and equal to 3 hours per day of screen time, less than and equal to 7 per day of self-reported sitting time and less than and equal to 9 hours per day of accelerometer-measured sedentary time).

Using data from the 2016 Census, this study compares the weekly earnings of individuals in designated visible minority and White categories, as defined in the Employment Equity Act. This paper addresses three sets of research questions. First, in 2015, were there significant differences in the estimated weekly earnings of individuals in designated visible minority categories relative to White people? Among which designated visible minority categories were differences in weekly earnings largest? Were these differences similar among women and men? Second, to what extent did sociodemographic and employment characteristics account for differences in average weekly earnings across designated visible minority and White categories? And third, were differences in average weekly earnings narrower, wider or about the same in 2015 as in 2005?

The care economy, which includes paid and unpaid care for children, seniors, and people with disabilities, is a fundamental component of societies. In Canada, and around the world, demographic and socioeconomic transformations, notably the aging population, are increasing the demand for care workers. This study uses data from the 2016 Census of Population and from the Labour Force Survey to examine the personal and job characteristics of workers in paid care occupations by gender. It also examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the employment of workers in this sector, compared to workers in all other occupations.

44. Measuring workplace psychosocial factors in the federal government

The National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace (the Standard) identifies 13 psychosocial factors affecting psychological health and safety in the workplace that employers should measure and monitor with the goal of addressing areas for improvement. This study sought to determine the suitability of the Public Service Employee Survey as a tool for the assessment of these psychosocial factors in public service employees. It also aimed to explore—in a preliminary manner—predictors of job satisfaction in these employees. Data from the 2017 and 2019 Public Service Employee Survey were analyzed. Specifically, exploratory structural modelling and tests of measurement invariance were used to identify a measurement model reflecting the psychosocial factors outlined in the Standard and to evaluate the equivalence of this model across both Public Service Employee Survey administrations.

Reliance on the use of opioids to manage pain has increased over time, as have opioid-related morbidity and deaths. In 2019, Statistics Canada reported descriptive associations between demographic and geographic descriptors, certain mental health disorders, and problematic opioid pain relief medications (OPRM) use among Canada’s OPRM-using population aged 15 years or older. The goal of this analysis is to extend that previous research by using modelling to examine the associations for a broader range of characteristics. It strives to clarify which socioeconomic, health behaviour and psychosocial factors are independently and significantly associated with a greater likelihood of problematic OPRM use after accounting for other descriptors.

Decisions by economic agents, such as firms and consumers, depend on their views about inflation. Consumers’ views of inflation, are systematically higher than inflation measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), and more so for certain demographic groups. While measurement factors can explain part of this gap, behavioral factors appear to play a larger role. This article examines these factors to explain the gap between CPI’s inflation and inflation perceptions in Canada.
