- Articles and reports: 18-001-X2024003Description: This study compares the Government of Canada’s direct and indirect measures to support R&D, as captured by business innovation and growth support (BIGS) programs and the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax incentive program. BIGS and SR&ED are two central instruments that the Canadian government uses to stimulate R&D expenditures in the business sector.Release date: 2024-05-17
- Articles and reports: 18-001-X2024002Description: This study examined the impact of federal business innovation and growth support (BIGS) programs on firm financial performance measured using revenue, profit and employment metrics. Using Statistics Canada’s Business Linkable File Environment data, the study observed the effects of BIGS on exporting versus non-exporting firms and Canadian- versus U.S.-owned firms from 2015 to 2020. Unlike previous studies that relied mainly on survey data, one significant aspect of this research was the use of a new dataset, enabling panel data structures and models to be employed. To assess the impact of BIGS and research and development spending on three interrelated measures of firm financial performance, the CDM (Crépon et al., 1998) framework was adopted.Release date: 2024-04-25
- Articles and reports: 37-20-00012024001Description: This guide is for users of the Education and Labour Market Longitudinal Platform (ELMLP). The data for the products associated with this issue are derived from integrating Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) administrative data with other administrative data on earnings. Statistics Canada has derived a series of annual indicators on the labour market outcomes of public postsecondary graduates including median employment income by educational qualification, field of study, age group, gender and status of student in Canada for Canada, the provinces and the territories combined.Release date: 2024-04-17
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202400200001Description: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted several issues among health care workers in Canada’s long-term care and seniors’ (LTCS) homes, including labour shortages, staff retention difficulties, overcrowding, and precarious working conditions. There is currently a lack of information on the health, well-being, and working conditions of health care workers in LTCS homes—many of them immigrants—and a limited understanding of the relationship between them. Using data from the 2021 Survey on Health Care Workers’ Experiences During the Pandemic, this paper examines differences between immigrant and non-immigrant workers’ health outcomes and precarious working conditions during the pandemic.Release date: 2024-02-21
- Articles and reports: 12-001-X202300200004Description: We present a novel methodology to benchmark county-level estimates of crop area totals to a preset state total subject to inequality constraints and random variances in the Fay-Herriot model. For planted area of the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), it is necessary to incorporate the constraint that the estimated totals, derived from survey and other auxiliary data, are no smaller than administrative planted area totals prerecorded by other USDA agencies except NASS. These administrative totals are treated as fixed and known, and this additional coherence requirement adds to the complexity of benchmarking the county-level estimates. A fully Bayesian analysis of the Fay-Herriot model offers an appealing way to incorporate the inequality and benchmarking constraints, and to quantify the resulting uncertainties, but sampling from the posterior densities involves difficult integration, and reasonable approximations must be made. First, we describe a single-shrinkage model, shrinking the means while the variances are assumed known. Second, we extend this model to accommodate double shrinkage, borrowing strength across means and variances. This extended model has two sources of extra variation, but because we are shrinking both means and variances, it is expected that this second model should perform better in terms of goodness of fit (reliability) and possibly precision. The computations are challenging for both models, which are applied to simulated data sets with properties resembling the Illinois corn crop.Release date: 2024-01-03
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202301100001Description: At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an overrepresentation of males in COVID-19 deaths worldwide, with Canada reporting more female COVID-19 deaths. This study examines the overrepresentation of female COVID-19 deaths in Canada, with an immigration lens. This study also evaluates whether there is a sex difference in COVID-19 deaths by immigrant status in Canada and, if so, for which age groups and in which provinces or census metropolitan areas (CMAs).Release date: 2023-11-15

- Articles and reports: 75F0002M2023006Description: This study aims to profile workers in the homelessness support sector using data from the 2021 and 2016 censuses. The homelessness support sector is defined by combining specific occupations and industry of employment to identify individuals who work in jobs that provide services to families and individuals who face homelessness. The study profiles these individuals by geography, age, sex, family status, educational attainment, indigenous identity and visible minority status. The study also addresses their earnings and poverty status.Release date: 2023-05-10

- Stats in brief: 11-627-M2023030Description: The Survey of Maintenance Enforcement Programs (SMEP) collects information on child and spousal support payments and cases from provincial and territorial maintenance enforcement programs (MEPs). These programs exist in each province and territory to assist in the collection and enforcement of child and spousal support payments. The SMEP data provide information on the volume and type of cases enrolled, enforcement actions taken, support amounts due and compliance with support payments, among other measures. The data do not cover all support cases in Canada, as not all support orders are registered in MEPs.Release date: 2023-03-24

Cycling is the fastest growing mode of transportation in many Canadian communities and has experienced major boosts during the COVID pandemic. While there have been recent efforts to develop national measures of active living environments for walking and for transit in Canada, there are no corresponding measures for cycling environments. The goal of this study is to develop the first national dataset in Canada for Dissemination area -level metrics of the cycling environment: the Canadian Bikeway Comfort and Safety metrics. This will help develop area-level metrics of the cycling environment for all of Canada.

The Survey of Older Workers is sponsored by the Labour Market Policy branch of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC). The survey is designed to assess the labour market intentions and transitions of older Canadians. The subject matter is intended to identify "factors" that influence the decision to retire or remain working. In this context pensions, general finances, the role of dependents, the nature of work, health considerations etc., will be of primary concern in trying to understand workers' intentions and motivations.
Release date: 2010-11-15 - 2. Building on Our Competencies: Canadian Results of the International Adult Literacy and Skills Survey ArchivedJournals and periodicals: 89-617-XGeography: Canada, Province or territoryDescription:
The International Adult Literacy and Skills Survey, undertaken in 2003, measured the proficiencies of a representative sample of Canadian adults aged 16 and over in four domains: prose literacy, document literacy, numeracy and problem solving, and benchmarked performance against an international standard. The proficiency scores are compared between provinces, territories and nations, and over time. Moreover, literacy performance is examined in relation to differences in variables such as educational attainment, employment and unemployment, earnings and self-assessed health. Analyses of the literacy performance of groups of special interest, including women and men, young adults and seniors, recent and established immigrants, and Aboriginal populations are included.

Release date: 2005-03-11 - Journals and periodicals: 53F0007XGeography: CanadaDescription:
This analytical study uses Canadian Vehicle Survey data for 2000 to explain road use characteristics of young and aging drivers on a national basis. The analysis examines differences between two age groups - those aged 24 and under and those aged 55 and over - with the remainder of the population, those aged 25 to 54.
The focus of the study is on when and why drivers choose to make road trips, and how the driving population compares with the population as a whole. Driver characteristics were compared with Canadian motor vehicle traffic collision statistics published by Transport Canada (1999) as a means of putting driving exposure into perspective.
