Additionally, health behaviours established in childhood extend into adulthood and can influence oral health outcomes later in life. Using data from the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth, this study investigates the association between dental insurance, income, and dental care access for Canadian children and youth aged 1 to 17 years. It contributes to a baseline understanding of oral health care use before the implementation of the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

This study presents a socio-demographic profile of children aged 0 to 14 years with affirmative responses to the DSQ filter questions on the 2016 Census. More specifically, the study examined the distributions of activity limitations by children’s age, sex, and family socioeconomic characteristics. The consistency of this profile with well-established patterns of child disability from the existing literature is discussed, and recommendations are made for research to further assess the suitability of the DSQ filter questions for generating an appropriate sampling frame for prospective child disability surveys.

This spotlight article aims to understand differences in sociodemographic and economic characteristics between women and men employed in the early learning child care occupations, using the 25% micro-data sample of the 2016 Canadian Census (long form).

The care economy, which includes paid and unpaid care for children, seniors, and people with disabilities, is a fundamental component of societies. In Canada, and around the world, demographic and socioeconomic transformations, notably the aging population, are increasing the demand for care workers. This study uses data from the 2016 Census of Population and from the Labour Force Survey to examine the personal and job characteristics of workers in paid care occupations by gender. It also examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the employment of workers in this sector, compared to workers in all other occupations.

The pandemic presented a long list of threats to the mental and physical well-being of children, parents and educators across the nation. To move towards the end of the pandemic and a return to normalcy, difficult choices such as closing schools had to be made by policy-makers. With our guest Dr. Kelley Zwicker, a pediatric doctor at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), we discussed the potential short- and long-term effects of the school closures on students and their parents.

Indigenous people represent one of the youngest populations in Canada. On average, Indigenous people were 8.4 years younger than the non-Indigenous population in 2016. Youth aged 15 to 24 years make up one sixth of the entire Indigenous population (16.9%). This chapter examines the demographic, familial, educational, economic, health and cultural characteristics of Indigenous youth aged 15 to 24. Data are largely taken from the 2016 Census of Population and the 2017 Aboriginal Peoples Survey.

This survey also collects information on parents' and guardian's labour market participation to better understand the interaction between work and the use of early learning and child care arrangements. Results from this survey will be used to help improve the Canada-wide early learning and child care system and provide Canadians with a strong baseline of data to measure progress and changes to the system.
