Description:
The objective of this study is to compare estimates of physical activity among adults from a newly developed Canadian questionnaire with those obtained objectively by accelerometry. Data for 18- to 79-year-olds were collected in 2014 and 2015 as part of the Canadian Health Measures Survey. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity was reported on the household questionnaire by domain (transportation, recreation, and occupational or household) as part of the new Physical Activity Adult Questionnaire (PAAQ) and measured objectively using the Actical accelerometer.

The Canadian Survey on Disability (CSD) is a national survey of Canadians aged 15 and over whose everyday activities are limited because of a long-term condition or health-related problem.
The 2017 CSD Concepts and Methods Guide is designed to assist CSD data users by providing relevant information on survey content and concepts, sampling design, collection methods, data processing, data quality and product availability. Chapter 1 of this guide provides an overview of the 2017 CSD by introducing the survey's background and objectives. Chapter 2 explains the key concepts and definitions and introduces the indicators measured by the CSD questionnaire modules. Chapters 3 to 6 cover important aspects of survey methodology, from sampling design to data collection and processing. Chapters 7 and 8 cover issues of data quality, including the approaches used to minimize and correct errors throughout all stages of the survey. Users are cautioned against making comparisons with data from the 2012 CSD. Chapter 9 outlines the survey products that are available to the public, including data tables, an analytical article and reference material. Appendices provide more detail on the survey's indicators and other supporting documents for the CSD.

Estimates of energy intake are lower in 2015 compared with 2004. The difference observed is too large to be explained by a change in energy requirements or physical activity at the population level. Self-reported dietary intake is subject to misreporting and may explain part of this difference. The objectives of this study are to assess how misreporting has changed from 2004 to 2015 and to demonstrate how these changes may affect the interpretation of the national intake data of Canadians. Data from the 2004 Canadian Community Health Survey - Nutrition (CCHS - Nutrition) and the 2015 CCHS - Nutrition were used to estimate energy intake and requirements for all participants aged 2 or older.

Over the past century, life expectancy at birth in Canada has risen substantially. However, these gains in the quantity of life say little about gains in the quality of life. This study calculates health-adjusted life expectancy (HALE), an indicator of quality of life, for the combined household and institutional population every four years from 1994/1995 to 2015. Trends over time in health status, life expectancy, and HALE are examined. The study also discusses how HALE has changed relative to life expectancy.

Record linkage has been identified as a potential mechanism to add treatment information to the Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR). The purpose of the Canadian Cancer Treatment Linkage Project (CCTLP) pilot is to add surgical treatment data to the CCR. The Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) and the National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS) were linked to the CCR, and surgical treatment data were extracted. The project was funded through the Cancer Data Development Initiative (CDDI) of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer (CPAC).
The CCTLP was developed as a feasibility study in which patient records from the CCR would be linked to surgical treatment records in the DAD and NACRS databases, maintained by the Canadian Institute for Health Information. The target cohort to whom surgical treatment data would be linked was patients aged 19 or older registered on the CCR (2010 through 2012). The linkage was completed in Statistics Canada’s Social Data Linkage Environment (SDLE).
